I don't this wine, but the million bottle barrage of $2 Charles Shaw wines is still making news in Southern California.

cheap wine makes me sick (Reply to this comment)

I bought a bottle of Charles Shaw Carbernet 2001 red wine at TJ to see what a 2 buck wine tastes like and had a bad experience
I felt headaches and palpitations and heartbeat irregularities. I know i feel like this for some white wines, but here I had only a half glass of this red wine
I had my lesson about cheap wines

Alice White... I recently located the 2001 Chard for $5.99/Magnum. A fantastic deal.

I'm not sure if you connected the dots in the article, but the Charles Shaw name was purchased by Franzia when Charles Shaw divorced his wife a decade or so back.

The quality does varry quite a bit. If you get a good bottle, I'd go back and get it while it's still good. I think they put a lot of different stuff behind that label. Franzia has a reputation for playing fast and loose.

Since I am not a wine drinker, I appreciate this honest review (Reply to this comment)

*I've been to Trader Joe's both here and in Northern California and stood in amazement as buyers bought this wine by the cases. (All 3) I kept asking everyone if it was good. I tried it and like all other wines, it tasted like vinegar to me. Glad to know that even for $1.99 you only get what you pay for, lol

Tom,
Thank you for this most accurate and complete commentary on this(these) product(s).

I've drunk two buck chuck...thrice, to double check my feelings. My evaluation echos your comments. These are not bad wines (ratings in the high 60's to the low 70's on the 100 pt rating scale, but they are far from "good" wines. Even at $2.00 a bottle, I feel they are over-priced...$.99 a bottle seems a better fit of the price to quality ratio, IMO.

Thanks for creating such a complete and comprehensive review.

Merlot. $1.99? Here in Ariz., they are selling for $2.99 at Trader Joe's. Terrific overview.
