not so good (Reply to this comment)
by reggiefavre
Yeah, you didn't do this very good. But hey, you can pick whatever you want. Are you an old woman? because that your music selection makes me think. Come on! of all the great rock and roll songs in the world you pick these??? still good songs, but if you believe they are the best you are indeed an old lady.

...11 and 17 I love the placement of (maybe I'd have put them higher) but other than that my list would be very different. Good post, I think I may do one of these for grins.

Your list is pretty good, but did u just forget to include Stairway to Heaven, perhaps the greatest song by perhaps the greatest rock band in history, Led Zepplin?

TRUE COMEDY! (Reply to this comment)
by wowthatisfunny
Probably one of the FUNNIEST things I have EVER read....The Clash....at # 3 ahead of: the Beatles, The Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Black Crowes, R.E.M., Tom Petty, AC/DC, Pearl Jam, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, and of course Led Zeppelin. No mention of Jimi, The Doors, Clapton?!?, but SURELY THE CLASH!!!!????!HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
P.S. E(O)pinion or not...that is funny

Didn't agree with all the songs but hey, to each their own. I did get some awesome ideas for a good sized request list on my local rock station though. ;)
I'm a self-employed gal doing an all nighter on a few of sites and man, I NEED some good tunes!
Thanks for the list,

After reading Matt's review, I was inspired to produce (what I think) is Rock & Roll's top 40 songs of all time. Have a look

REM is not Rock & Roll. It's a "New Wave" or alternative KROQ type of band. And the Clash is a punk band.

Kiss in the top 10?? Aerosmith -- the "American" Rolling Stones 'knockoff' in the top 10? Wild Horses over Gimme Shelter???
I don't think you know much about music.

I completely agree with all your decisions! Bohemian Rhapsody is the best because you can listen to it forever. I downloaded the top 50 or so to my library (the ones that I didn't already have that is).

Pretty Darn Accurate (Reply to this comment)
by robbie-v
Although sadly i was born in the wrong generation, I'm trying to go back and listen to some "real" music. This was a pretty awesome list and im now using it as a list of things i need to listen to.
Also...i know you don't like the rolling stones but you should listen to "Gimme Shelter" thats an awesome song...i don't know if it qualifies to be in your list though. It ws really awesome when it was on Goodfellas. (thats a movie you should watch if you havn't already)

missing something smelly (Reply to this comment)
by beekd91
Matt, where's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? It's the only Nirvana song I even liked much, and it was released 11 years back and is still going strong!
I have nothing else to say, except that I haven't heard 90% of the songs on that list. Christian rock is my thing, so I guess that's why.
Keep writing stuff like this, though. It's interesting.

Re: what is this (Reply to this comment)
by MattA75
I don't believe I ever said I didn't like The Beatles...I do like the Beatles...but the Beatles are a POP band first, a rock band (rarely) second...hence this was a list of the greatest ROCK songs ever, I excluded much of the Beatles catalog from consideration...
As for Aerosmith being third rate, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it...just as my opinion is that Neil Young is highly over-rated
And yeah, I don't know what rock and roll is all about...please...
Then again, it's easy to join a website, leave a comment, and then never write anything of your own...
Methinks you take a list like mine (which was done purely for fun) WAY too seriously...so you don't agree with my choices, that's great
There's no reason to bring insults into the mix...but then again, your body of work (or lack thereof) speaks for itself

what is this (Reply to this comment)
by colonel2
Your list is absolutely idiotic. The fact that you don't actually LIKE the Beatles, despite the fact that virtually everything they did broke new ground, should preclude you from having an opinion. It seems that anyone with a monkey's ability to type has acquired some opinion about themselves in respect to music. you simply don't know what rock and roll is all about.
Virtually all, No actually, ALL of the groups you mention owe their very existence to the fact that, whatever they did, the Beatles did it first..Cliche songs??
You child, at the time Aerosmith came out they were, and still are in my book considered third rate..
They shouldn't be mentoned in the same breath as the original Fleetwood Mac, never mind the Beatles..Your musical sensibility shoud serve you well at Tiger Beat, do they still exist?
And this pilloring of rock icons like Neil Young, who whatever his faults, was prolific and creative enough to create a body of work the resounds with young people as well as old..
This infantile, oh so precious attitude that because something is commercially successful it can't possibly be any good, should, I hope make you think twice about taking on a task like this in the future. You're unqaulified. Get out of town.

...is not just a fun song! It's an important protest song against the Vietnam War, but yes, it's also catchy and features great guitar from Stills and Young. I wish someone would write a decent protest song for this war!

I understand your opinion on the Beatles... but the most popular band ever, had to be doing something right, or they wouldn't have been so popular. The beatles may not have possesed complete mastery of their instruments but thier ablility to create simple yet original compositons made them great... The multiple styles and intruments thet used shows their complete mastery of the art of compostion.

I just finished reading all 100 songs and the near misses, and I think I may go ahead and do a similar list, thanks to this...
Mine would definitely be different (I hardly listen to some of these bands), but some of the songs would be in my list for sure.
Thanks for a great read!

...that Roger Daltry screaming "YYYYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" in Won't Get Fooled Again was one of the finest moments in rock and roll, and most representative of the spirit of rock music.
My overall list (as anyone else's) would be different from yours, but I will definitely say that you have good taste, my friend. Really, you get points for just giving enough of a sh*t to take the time to put this list together.
Rock on, my brother.

I had the pleasure of hearing "Sweet Home Alabama" twice lastnight at work; the radio station has a history of playing the same song twice in a night, sometimes not even an hour apart. Doesn't matter what I'm doing, when that song comes on, I have to have a broom in my hands to play along.
And thank God there are others who recognize the fine piece of work that "Better Man" is. As for "Bohemian Rhapsody", nothing gets the crowd at the Karaoke shows going better than that song.

Putting "Bohemian Rhapsody" at # 1 is a great choice. It's one of the greatest songs of all-time. I thought "Stairway" would go to # 1 but Queen has always been the kick-*ss band they was. That was an excellent list my friend.

Kudos to you bro for not bowing to cliches and predictibility. It's SO refreshing to see a top 20 that isn't absolutley FLOODED with Beatles (the most overrated pop band ever) and the Stones (the most overrated rock bandever). Thanks for a great list.

Very nice list and a great series of reviews.
