The Bottom Line Had I not restricted my choices to genre the list might have been different but if you want to watch a weekend of allsorts this is my choice.

All films fall into some kind of category, some into more than one. This is a list of what film is the best from each category (in my opinion). Please let me know what you think.

The ‘feel-good’ film - Groundhog Day - Harold Ramis and Trevor Albert
Whenever I’m sick and I have to stay in bed all day I stick this film in the machine because it is guaranteed to cheer me up. Bill Murray gives his best performance to date alongside Andie McDowell (don’t worry, she’s actually good in this) and the wonderful Chris Elliot who plays Bill Murray’s goofy and desperate camera-man, he is arguably the best thing in the film.

The gangster film – Jackie Brown – Quentin Tarrantino
I don’t know quite how gangster this film is but this is basically an entry for Quentin Tarrantino as all three of his films would be in my top-twenty. I think Jackie Brown is the best because it is the most entertaining and the characters are better developed. The whole cast are superb, in particular Samuel L Jackson, Bridget Fonda and Robert Forster (who won an Oscar for his role). This film is based on the book Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard.

The ‘coming-of-age’ film – Almost Famous – Cameron Crowe
This is one of my all time favourites. Patrick Fugit (William) is such a star, he is very believable and endearing and I look forward to seeing him in things in the future. Also good is Kate Hudson (a ‘band-aid’ who calls herself Penny Lane) and Frances McDormand (William’s despairing mother). This film makes me wish I could have been around at the time. The script sparkles and the soundtrack adds to its appeal.

The Musical – Moulin Rouge – Baz Luhrman
Well to be honest there aren’t that many contenders since I find most musicals hard to tolerate, but this one is magic. Baz Luhrman really is a great talent, which he proves here. There are so many little references in this one from Nirvana to The Police, something for everyone. However being individually very good there is little chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor but this doesn’t really seem to matter. The standout performance comes from John Leguizamo as the jealous Duke.

The Award Winner – American Beauty – Sam Mendes
This one the Oscar for Best Picture in 1999 among other things, and well deserved it was too. The story of a family who outwardly seem perfect but inwardly there more messed up than the rest of us. Mena Suvari is splendidly shallow and self-centred as a wannabe model who comes on to her best friend’s father (Kevin Spacey). Good start, good end, the in between isn’t bad either.

The Romantic-Comedy – Four Weddings and a Funeral – Mike Newell
If you liked Notting Hill you’ll adore this. Hugh Grant (Charles) is at his blubbering best in this film about, surprisingly enough, four weddings and a funeral. This is another film with an outstanding cast. Special credit goes to John Hannah as Matthew the friend of Charles. This sparked a succession of films by the same people including, About a Boy, The Guru and Bridget Jones’s Diary (which was a contender for this one along with When Harry Met Sally).

The under-appreciated – To Die For – Gus Van Sant
This is a gem. Nicole Kidman plays a small-town weather reporter who goes to extreme measures to get a promotion in the industry. This was the point when Joaquin Phoenix became an actor in his own right instead of River’s brother. While perhaps not the most believable story it is given strength by it’s dark humour script and Kidman’s excellent acting. Well-observed.

The scary movie – Psycho – Alfred Hitchcock
While there have been some very good horror/thrillers in recent years (The Sixth Sense, Scream) this is a classic that stands the test of time. Incase you haven’t seen it the film is basically about a woman who after stealing money from her boss goes to stay in a motel in the middle of nowhere where the host gives an unusual welcome. Suspense puts you at the end of your seat and curiosity keeps you watching even if you are terrified.

The Action blockbuster – Speed – Jan de Bont
Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper star in this film about a bus that has a bomb planted on it. If the bus goes below 50mph the bomb will explode, and the bus is filled with passengers who include Bullock who ends up driving the thing. Tricky? Not with Reeves on hand to save the day. Action, Chemistry, Clever gadgety stuff and enough twists and turns to make a roller coaster.

The Drama – The Shawshank Redemption – Frank Darabont
Forest Gump is a close second for this one but ultimately The Shawshank Redemption wins for several reasons. It has to pull fewer tricks out the bag to work and it didn’t make me cry as much. With the ultimate twist at the end which you mustn’t let people ruin for you this is a story of all the injustices that took place in a prison over three decades, and how one man got his own back. Unfortunately over-looked at the time it is now many people’s favourite film of all time after Star Wars and The Godfather. And you can see why.
