The best of all PS2 launch titles

Written: Jul 15 '01
Pros:Great graphics, incredibly fun!
Cons:Framerate a little jumpy, hard to get started
The Bottom Line: A game for all ages and tastes that everyone (Well almost) will love.

SSX has definitely redefined snowboarding games as we know them. This is the most fun you've ever had with a snowboarding game on any console to date. I don't even know why any other developers try to compete in the snowboarding genre when going up against this bad boy. With 8 very different (On one level your riding on an iceburg being pulled by a boat!) and chalenging levels, each with different modes of play: Showoff, racing, and free-run, any gamer of any age (My 5 year old brother loves it) will have a great time with this near perfect PS2 game.

SSX is definitely made for one player. Choose from 8 different snowboarders, complete with attitude and a wide assortment of clothes (That you have to unlock by doing incredibly hard tricks). You get experience points for getting bronze, silver, or gold medals with gold getting you the most. These points help to make your snowboarder better in several catagories: Speed, stability, tricks, and edging. Although racing for your first time is great fun, it can be a little frustrating. You will barely be able to do a flip unless you get massive air when your a rookie. As you progress, your snowboarder will eventually get "master" status. Thats when you can pull off a trick by just jumping! Persistance definitly pays off in this game, and you will be greatly rewarded if you just keep trying. It took me about 3 weeks to get one boarder at a decent rank. Multiply that by 8 and you have a game that will take a VERY long time to COMPLETELY finish.

Two-player can also be pretty fun if you have a friend that knows what he's doing in the game. The only complaint I have about two player is that the framerate can noticebly drop, it's not that big of a deal because it doesn't affect the game really, it's so minute, but you can notice it.

The smooth graphics really give you a feeling of speed and the crowds cheer you on at the starting gate. Sometimes there's so much going on (Especially in Tokyo Mega-plex) that you start focusing on other things in the level than what your doing!

The sound is great, really getting you pumped to do some tricks. The music even fades while your doing a trick for that extra dramatic effect. Rhazel, the announcer, adds a very nice touch telling it like it is (When your in last he says "Your in uhhhh, 6th!) and stating the last trick you did no matter how complex (Although I have done 5 front flips and all he said was "SICK!").

If your a Tony Hawk fan, racing, snowboarding, or action game fan, go out and buy this game now. I can assure almost any gamer of any age will love this game and it will provide you with hours of entertainment.
