Part of the new Compaq Internet PC Series, the $2,549 (direct) Presario 5600s boasts several new and intriguing technologies, but the machine tested at PC Labs was without DVD player software, speakers, and printed documentation. Though Compaq says these items will accompany the shipping system, the jury is still out on this particular machine's DVD playback and audio abilities.
The Presario's sculpted mini-tower is attractive, but it can't be opened without a screwdriver and offers little room for expansion (one PCI slot and two open drive bays). A slightly obtrusive door in the front of the machine affords access to the Zip and DVD drives, and a second front door covers a convenient set of USB and FireWire ports. A second set of such ports is available in the rear of the machine.
The system comes preloaded with a slick Internet access wizard and includes a Compaq Max Digital modem (which will provide faster online access in the near future, when G.Lite service is available). The wizard gets you online quickly, providing 50 free hours of Web access through GTE. The machine also includes Compaq's home networking package, also reviewed today in First Looks.
Compaq's service and support is excellent. The machine's warranty lasts only one year (with 90 days of on-site service), but it ships with preloaded restore software and an application for receiving remote support over the Web.
