The Bottom Line Just read on...
First of all, I have to raise a glass to Ginzo and wish him a happy 3rd Epinions anniversary. Cheers, Ginzo. And a thank you for allowing us all a little nostalgia. I thought Id have memories as a theme for these five comments Ive picked out. Just a little aside before I begin. I remember when Epinions had its major redesign in January 2001 and for a short time there was no facility to leave comments. That lack for me was such a gaping hole. I came across my review about the beta site where I plead for a return of comments. All I can say is that I might not still be around if Epinions had remained commentless. To me, comments are little jewels of sharing. And so to the comments Ive chosen to reheat for your delectation and delight 1) The following was left on a review I did on censorship and Little Black Sambo. What I liked about it was the vivid impression that this book had had on the writer : When I was a Little Girl.. (Reply to this comment) by lisalexx My sister and I had a record telling the tale of Sambo that we listened to daily. We also used to go to Sambos restaurant for pancake breakfast. Were not talking about in the bowels of the south. I grew up 20 minutes away from Detroit incidently the Sambos restaurant of my youth was not lily white either. Is Sambo a racist book? I dont know. I know I liked the book when I was little. 2) My second offering was written in response to a review of British and American English and the possible pitfalls in understanding : I have several British friends and we always enjoy the differences in expressions (Reply to this comment) by momochris My absolute favorite mix up was a British actor that wanted a wake up call. He called down to the front desk and asked the gentleman to knock him up at 6 A.M. In the U.S. a woman who is knocked up is pregnant. We all got quite a laugh out of that one! Janice 3) I enjoyed this comment which was left on my review of a book called The chocolate touch about a boy for whom everything he touched turned to chocolate : I remember this book as a kid (Reply to this comment) by st_Patrick It certainly worked for me. I didnt eat chocolate for weeks afterwards. The description of the joy of being able to drink something other than chocolate reminds me of what its like after Easter. Its such a relief to finally get through all those chocolate eggs and get back to real food. Thanks for reminding me of this book. Patrick 4) For my fourth choice Im choosing one left on a review of a book, The crooked apple tree where childrens imaginations were fired by a tree in their garden : How neat! (Reply to this comment) by lorace I loved the unfolding of this story. What fun it was to be young and imaginative, huh? You made me remember. And, oh, I love trees! Especially that one lovely tree atop a hill. LOL. Thanks, this was a great review, Lorace 5) And finally, a comment provoked by a review of a childrens book, Underwear dos and donts (probably self-explanatory!) : Checks & Stripes!!! (Reply to this comment) by AinsleyJo This part about the zebra reminds me of back when The Rolling Stones were first popular, and they were going to be on The Ed Sullivan Show. I was going on about how cute Mick Jagger was and wanted my mom to take a look at him. Unfortunately, he came on stage that night wearing a checked shirt with striped trousers not only that, but he also looked as if hed just gotten out of bed without brushing or combing his hair and had this wild look on his face. Needless to say, my mom wasnt too impressed with how he looked and neither was I. Back then, the only times you could have been excused for wearing a checked shirt with striped trousers was if you were too poor to buy other clothing items and these were all you had or if you were a clown. Anyway, the whole picture of Mick that evening was anything but handsome and sexy! Cheers! AJ :o) And here ends my selections. Thank you to everyone who has ever commented on my reviews positively and the reverse. I do so enjoy getting feedback. To see the others in this anniversary write-off for Ginzo, please see the website below : www.angelfire.com/jazz/sleeper54/ginzowriteoff/writers.html I would have included a complete list, but this write-off just seems to grow and grow. |
