How I chose My Game ConsoleMar 14 '03 Write an essay on this topic.

The Bottom Line I cringed and grimaced, picked the Gamecube, saved mucho dinero and am quite happy.
OK.... I go and play NHL Hitz weekly at a friend's place on PS2. My editor and brother have X-Boxes, cousin has a PS2 also. With a fair amount of variety around me I was overwhelmed with the task of picking one. If I get a PS2 I get huge variety, compatibility with my old PS1 stuff and ability to share games with friends. $169 used at the Gameplace by me If I get the XBox I get that huge 8gb hard drive, hands down the best graphics of the three and the availability of cracks to allow UNIX OS installation, and emulators to play old sega games (I crave the good old EA NHL Games) $149 used at the Gameplace by me. If I get the Gamecube I get a mixed bag of tricks: better graphics than PS2, fewer games than PS2, exclusive games that I care about (Rogue Squadron, Metroid, Godzilla and Ikaruga - not to mention ones I don't find that interesting: Pikisomething, Mario junk, Zelda). That famously small controller and no DVD/CD playback. Taking all of this into consideration I looked at the commonalities: EA Sports (all three) and NHL Hitz (all three) and found that I can score gamecube games for 1/2 the price of the other 2. Add that I can get a PS2 controller adapter from NYKO that is supposed to work well... will let y'all know) and the fact that Ikaruga (famously unavailable game) is coming out soon only for Gamecube and lo' I found myself spending under $120 for a system, memory card, extra controller, NHL Hitz, & Rogue Leader. That's sick. All things $$$-wise even I'd have to say XBox hand's down but after playing Hitz on PS2 for month+ and transitioning to Cube I'd say the game is better, looks better and starts up faster. (not to mention $10 cheaper). The one caveat is that I won't be playing online multiplayer games anytime soon. That's what my computer's for anyway, right? |
