2002 - Movies That Made My Day
Mar 14 '03
The Bottom Line A mixed bag of drama, comedy, and heartbreak.
2002 seemed like an odd year to me in the movie-viewing business. I saw more movies in the theater than I ever had before however, many of them were on the mediocre side. Why some were ever released is quite a mystery to me. But hey - that's the ten worst movies category :).
Here are my favorite movies from 2002. When I say favorite, I don't mean "best" or "critically acclaimed". I mean, my personal favorites. This list is no particular order.
Ice Age
A mammoth, sloth, sabertooth tiger, and baby make their way across the wintery conditions of an ice age while at the same time, learning something about each other. Sounds kinda preachy, doesn't it? Not at all. 20th Century Fox, who hadn't had much luck in the animated area, struck gold with Ice Age. It was funny and heartwarming - a film that anyone could enjoy.
The Good Girl
Justine reaches a point in her life where nothing has meaning. She hates her job, she hates her marriage, and most of all, she seems to hate herself. While this movie had all of the elements of an Afterschool Special, it was the performances of Jennifer Aniston, John C. Reilly and Jake Gyllenhaal which made all the difference in the world.
The Barbershop
It's a simple premise really. A son inherits the business from his father and it takes something significant for him to realize what a real gem he has in the barbershop. There were so many outstanding performances in this movie - Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Troy Garity...The humor was priceless and the music even better.
Minority Report
Although I haven't completely forgiven Tom for dumping Nicole, I was able to put aside my anger for him and see this movie. Glad I did because I found it to be one of the neatest of the year. If you could forsee crime but were able to prevent it, would you? Sure, it was big and splashy however, it gave us something to think about while at the same time, it entertained us.
The Hours
The Hours focuses upon the lives of three women who live in three different time periods, and three different places in the world. All three are linked to a novel called, Mrs. Dalloway, written in 1925 by Virginia Woolf.
It's because of the brilliance of Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Ed Harris that I enjoyed the movie so much. Oh yes, then there's the brilliant directing, score, and actual story that made me feel more emotions then I've felt in a long time (when watching a movie at a theater).
White Oleander
Mothers and daughters. THE most complicated relationship in the world - I'm sure of this. That's what makes this movie so enjoyable...or should I say so theraputic.
This movie, for some odd reason, was overlooked by many. That's too bad because Michelle Pfeifer and Alison Lohman turn in wonderful performances as mother and daughter.
Two Weeks Notice
So sue me. This Sandra Bullock & Hugh Grant movie was entirely formulatic and predictable. Doesn't take away from the fact that it was funny and enjoyable to watch.
Drumline
With as many former-band geeks as there are out there (me included), it's surprising that it took this long for someone to make a movie about us. Good thing they did it right. Casting Nick Cannon as the hotshot, cowboy kid with a chip on his shoulder was a good move. He held his own against veteran actor Orlando Jones. The entire movie was filled with toe-tapping music including JC Chasez, first single, Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love).
Brown Sugar
It's hard not to fall in love with Taye Diggs and in this movie, it's just as hard not to fall in love with Sanaa Lathan. There are so few, intelligent movies made today where black actors/actresses own the film. Most of the time, they're stuck in some supporting role, playing the same type of "friend" or "bad" person. Here, they take the premise of two very important ties in most people's lives - music and friendship - and they have the characters mature to a naturally happy ending.
Lilo & Stitch
Disney let me down on Treasure Planet but kept their good feeling animation alive with Lilo & Stitch. The beauty in the movie was in the relationship between a little girl and a strange alien creature. So different yet so much alike.
Honorable Mention:
A Walk To Remember
