I just got off the phone with someone from the president's office of Newport News. He was so completely rude that I had to hang up on him. He was basically accusing me of lying when I told him I was recharged for a blouse. As I was looking for my credit card statement to tell him the date of the second charge to my card he became belligerent and I couldn't take his attitude any longer so I hung up on him. :(
I've been a customer of Newport News for years, ever since the days when they were called Avon Fashions. Over the years I've placed many orders with them. But after this last experience I will never feel comfortable shopping with them again.
I placed an order with Newport News in November 2006. One of the items I ordered was the 'bandini blouse'. When it arrived I was so disappointed when I noticed it had a big black stain on it. As soon as I noticed the stain I called Customer Service to let them know about the stain and I was given a number to write in a circle on the return label which I did and I shipped it back to them via UPS.
Approximately a week later I had a package in my mailbox from Newport News. I was excited thinking that I had my new stain-free blouse and that my order was complete. When I brought the package in and opened it I was shocked when I found the same stained blouse that I had shipped back to them. It was definitely the same blouse. I could tell because it was folded exactly the way I folded it when I shipped it back and it didn't have the original cardboard in the package that most new blouses have. So once again I called Newport News and I repeated the same process of writing a number in the circle and I shipped it back to them once again.
A few days later I received a call from Newport News asking if they could recharge my credit card since they credited it when the blouse was shipped back the first time. I was told that the blouse would be expedited to me and shipped out right away if they could recharge my card.
The new blouse was not shipped out right away. I had to wait over a week before it was even shipped but finally a few days before Christmas my new blouse arrived stain free. I was so happy to have that fiasco behind me. I thought everything was settled now. But that was not the case. A few days after Christmas I received a check from them in the mail for $9.04. I knew this wouldn't be good. Why would they send me a check for $9.04? This was for the second blouse minus the shipping charge! They actually charged me $5.95 to ship the second blouse back to them! They had the nerve to ship me a stained blouse twice and they expected me to pay the return shipping! Shortly after that I received a bill in the mail for $11.99. Between the time I placed my order and the time I received the unstained blouse the price had been reduced $3.00 so once again I was on the phone with customer service. I told them that I don't want their check and that I want my $3.00 credit on the card I placed the order with.
But the credit was never applied to my credit card. Instead they sent me another bill in the mail. This one came with a warning that if I don't send them payment for this bill I may not be able to place another order with Newport News. That's fine with me because I'm never shopping with them again.
My advice to anyone contemplating placing an order with Newport News is to check their rating with the Better Business Bureau. You may be lucky and get your order problem free or you just might be as unlucky as I have been with them and the other 92 people who have filed a complaint against them in the past 36 months.
Another thing I've noticed is I think they're owned by the same company as Spiegel. I always liked Spiegel but if they're related in anyway I'm not going to be a Spiegel customer any longer either.
