Been there done that TWICE. You are so write that the smell is not the same up close. At first I was not even sure what it was. My dog got sprayed right in the eyes the first time and it smelled almost like kerosene or something. Luckily I was able to carry him to the bathroom where I first washed his eyes out. We had nothing but baby shampoo so I shampooed and shampooed and shampooed. All through the night (these things always happen when you are about to tuck yourself in for the night) I think the only thing that really works is time. The stuff gets into the dogs skin and when they get damp of sweaty it starts to vaporize again. This went on for several months. The second occurence was right before we were to have an open house (we were trying to sell our house) well that delayed that a week until we could get the smell out of the house. Who would want to buy a house that smells like a skunk? Anyway thanks for sharing!

are what you use in a skunk incident.

Well, actually it does nothing for the smell, but trying can burn loads of calories. And then even more when you try and get all that yellow off your stuff. In the biz, we call that synergy.

You have my condolences (Reply to this comment)

When I was a kid we had a skunk-couple move in under our house (!!!) where they gave birth to some babies. The stench (and the sound of the babies) would come up through our air vents. I agree that the stench is awful, but if you have to live with it long enough you eventually become somewhat deadened to it. My parents called animal control and made sure they would capture the skunks (not kill them -- I guess the thought of killing the babies, even if they are skunk-babies, made my parents upset). It was a long while before the house smelled normal again.

I wish you the best of luck!

Nothing works... (Reply to this comment)

...not tomato juice, not laundry detergent, not commercial products...only time.

At least most dogs won't tangle with a skunk more than once.

One summer day my friend and I walked into his kitchen to find a skunk eating from the cat's bowl; he had left his back door open. The skunk gave us a long look over his shoulder, then turned back to continue eating. We stood there, frozen and gaping, until he turned once again, with a look that said unmistakably, "Are you still here?" We beat a hasty retreat until he had finished his meal and strolled out...

I feel sorry for you. Tomato juice is the only thing I've heard for a remedy.

about Tomato Juice as a home remedy for getting rid of the smell on doggies and other pets that tangle with skunks?

Hope you had good luck getting rid of the smell, but I envy you the peace and quiet of the woods.

On vacation once (Reply to this comment)

everyone had gone inside the cabins we had rented and I was sitting outside with my feet up at the picnic table when a little friendly neighborhood skunk wandered by and decided he was going to take a rest under the table.

The kids started to come out of the cabin, but wisely (thankfully!) stopped in their tracks and observed the scene from the doorway. I was doing my best not to giggle, but my whole body was shaking. I'm sure I wouldn't have laughed if I had gotten sprayed, but just being in that situation was hysterical to me.

Eventually the skunk just wandered off back into the woods.

Around here we just get possums and raccoons. My dog's been great at catching them - so they don't come into the backyard anymore.

Would scented candles help?

And every time I drive along the highway and get that sickening odor, it brings back that horrible experience. Argh! Sorry and I hope the weather clears.

I'm really sorry to hear about your bad experience.

Just be grateful that they didn't chase the skunk into your house. Otherwise it might be decades before you finally get rid of the smell. Gary.
