| DeRango's Full Review: U-Haul |
U-haul is easily one of the worst services I have every used, personally I would not recommend them, however many of us have no choice when the big move beckons. My personal experience with U-haul was nothing short of disappointing, and I encounter two similar experiences when helping my friends/family move as well.
My Experience
Like most people I reserved my vehicle in advance for the morning of the big move, which was just the beginning to my demise. When I arrived the day of with my reservation at 8:00AM, I was told that my truck was not there. Quite perplexed I questioned how this could be seeing I made reservations; furthermore there were several vehicles in the parking lot. Interestingly enough those vehicles were reserved to other customers??? Ok, so where is my truck? (Round and Round we went)
Originally I setup my route so I would pick up a truck at "Point A" and Drive to "Point B" as there was a U-Haul very close to my destination. Unfortunately due to this unforeseen circumstance I enjoyed the luxury of picking up the truck from "Point B" driving it back to "Point A" Then back to "Point B" rather than making just one trip. Frustrating!
Poor Service
The staff seemed highly unintelligent, they quickly blamed the computer for this error even though I had paperwork with prepaid deposits confirming the date, time, pickup, and drop off destinations. They were not fazed by my plight nor did they offer any type of compensation for my misdirected adventure. Furthermore I was stuck paying the extra mileage/gas on the truck due to the incompetent planning. During the whole episode the staff was unhelpful, ignorant, and rude.
The Ride
Well the truck we finally picked up 3 hours behind schedule was in no way, shape, or form ideal for transporting anything comfortably. The interior of the vehicle seats were in poor condition with rips and tear on the cushions, along with a radio that produced sound like a fireworks display. Furthermore it smelled like a gym shoe. I would have said something, but I was just thankful I finally got a truck. Not comfortable, but at least it ran and helped us complete our task.
Size
The storage area had a good amount room for the standard size, as the trucks came in three different sizes ranging in price and storage capacity. The smallest is recommended for someone moving from a 1-room apartment next would be from a 1-2bedroom house, and finally the largest was designed for up to 3 bedrooms. Keeping in mind the base price ranges from $19.99-$39.99 of course that does NOT include mileage, gas, taxes, or other amenities like a dolly or moving blankets. The truck did have moving blankets and a dolly available for a nominal charge.
Overall
My experience was just one of several similar crummy episodes we had when using U-haul. I can easily recommend using another competitor like Budget before giving U-Haul your business.
