Pros:Tasty, full of Vit B,versatile food.
Cons:An acquired taste.
The Bottom Line: An acquired taste perhaps but once you develop a taste for it, you can't live with out it.
Its thick, black and you could polish your boots with it. Vegemite, love it or hate it, but in New Zealand its almost a national food.
We have been given Vegemite from babyhood so maybe the prolonged exposure to it has numbed our taste buds to its tangy, yeasty, taste, but never the less a large jar of Vegemite or its rival Marmite sits in most N.Z's pantries.
What is Vegemite
It is a yeast spread, containing yeast, salt, malt extract, maltodexdrin, color caramel (150), spices and Vitamins Niacin,Thaimn, Riboflavin.
In a 5mg serving there is
Vit B1- 0.3mg
Vit B2 - 0.3mg
Niacin -2.3mg
Although it is very high in vitamin B we eat it for its taste rather than the Vitamin content. It does taste slightly bitter but the trick to eating it is to spread it thinly, extremely thinly. Too thick and you are left with a burning sensation in your mouth.
Vegemite Uses.
I like it best spread thinly onto crackers with cheese or on hot buttered toast for breakfast. My daughter likes it as Vegemite sandwiches for lunch and the boys eat it as 'Mousetraps. Cut slices of bread into 1inch strips, thinly spread with Vegemite and top with grated cheese. Grill in oven until cheese is bubbly.
A yummy after school snack.
If eating it proves too much, it does make a good alternative to beef stock in stews and other meat meals. Add 1-2 tsp Vegemite, to 1/4cup water. Stir until dissolved then add to meat mixture.
An acquired taste perhaps but once you develop a taste for it, you can't live with out it.
