About Me: I'm a technical writer and help developer for various software companies in southern California.

STOP THE INSANITY!!! Put your computer back to work... for you.

Written: Jul 16 '01
Pros:Dump that bloated Office! Get the features you actually use without hogging your system resources.
Cons:People who paid retail for Office will stay up late finding "features" 602 doesn't have.
The Bottom Line: Free Office replacement? Fully compatible? No learning?Yeah, I know. Expect nothing, be amazed. 602Pro proves that quality, performance and value are not lost arts.

Would you like your computer back?

Do you remember when business applications were supposed to help you do more business, instead of redefining your business?

Even if you don't, I've got a deal for you...

I'm not a word-processor and I don't crunch numbers all day. I still need professional level words and numbers more days than not, but it is the web development, desktop publishing and graphical applications that I do my real work with. They are hogs. They always have been, so I've always set my systems up to accommodate them. Perhaps your too have other things to do with your computer than save spreadsheets as web pages or make flyers in Word. Maybe you just want to do those things faster, and without installing 300 MBs of additional components you've never learned how to use.

Do you go back to when the computer interface was C:\ (if you had one of them fancy hard disks) or do you just wonder why your new computer is 100 times faster than your fist one but everything seems to run slower?

Give 602Pro PC Suite a spin. In less than 30 minutes you can have the software downloaded and installed. The interface is a little more friendly and colorful, but basically the menus and commands will all be familiar to Word and Excel users.

Personally, I would have settled for something a bit more useful than WordPad, that I could run alongside Dreamweaver or Corel.

602Text (word processor) and 602Tab (spreadsheet(even their names are simple)) run alongside my big hogs. And they have everything I've needed to use.

Mail merge? They can do it. Revision tracking? Got it. Forms design? Just drag and drop. Quick text effects? Yep.

HTML? You bet! And guess what? GOOD clean HTML. Not like Word or Frontpage or NetObjects etc.

Want to get a file off the web? The File Open window is a built in browser. They even throw in some familiar sounding templates in case you need an "elegant" memo with someone else's style. There's even a little clip art for your first web site. Very little, but at least it looks good enough to use.

Did I mention that the full installation is 15 MB? Just for comparison, that is less than 5% of what you'll hand over to Office XP Standard.

Don't want anyone to know your .DOCs and .XLSs were made by anything other than "authentic Microsoft?" Don't tell them and they won't know. The files are fully compatible.

The best part about being free means you don't have anything to lose by trying 602PCSuite for yourself. I'll bet you won't miss much, if anything. The only shortcoming is the free version spell checker. It does work, but some features are disabled. You can upgrade that with an add on pack that also includes a thesaurus, a visual "desktop" and barcode printing and some enhance graphical and web format features. That will set you back $50. Meanwhile, you can see if all you're missing is disk space.

If you don't agree, then the uninstall really will uninstall.
