Only a nut like me would name her trees!

Mar 24 '03

The Bottom Line Springtime is a wonderful time for healing and renewal.

When klueger invited me to participate in a nature write-off honoring his wife,Alshtromomy,I had no idea what topic I would choose.

In her honor, I am writing my first piece for the Writer's Corner.

Yesterday was a gorgeous Spring day so my husband and I spent some time outside assessing the winter toll on trees and flower beds and enjoying the sunshine.

We've been in our house almost ten years now. But when we moved in there was nothing but sod on the yard and a spindly walnut tree (so our builder told us) in the backyard that had survived the developer's bulldozer.

With a large corner lot, everything looked exceeding bare, so we went on a quest to find trees.

The first trees were bought were two Bradford Pears. We named them Sonny and Bubba and planted them on opposite sides of the front walkway.

Then we found a young oak tree that we called "Dwight Yoakum"... he found a place in the middle of a large area of lawn. We gave him plenty of growing room because we expected him to be the largest of our trees.

We also bought two Birch trees. There is a local newscaster named Joe Birch so, of course, we named the larger of the two trees, Joe Birch. We named the other Little Joe. (We were always Ponderosa fans!)

Next was the Elm tree who received oh-so-imaginative name of Elmo. Along with Myrtle, the Crepe Myrtle.

For some reason we named the walnut tree General Jackson, but a few years later we changed "his" name to Connie when "she" started producing pecans. She now provides some wonderful shade and squirrels enjoy her pecans... they always beat us to them!

My daughter picked out a weeping willow that she named Jacqueline, because she reminded her of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Sadly, we lost Jacqueline during a long dry summer.

My son picked out a peach tree he named Albert (his middle name) and it also happened to be an Alberta peach tree. In a few years the limbs were so loaded with tiny peaches they were about to break.

Over the years we checked on the trees and discussed their growth, almost as if they were our children. It was devastating when Elmo died in a fierce windstorm, toppling over and completely pulling out his roots.

Then a couple of years later, poor Bubba bit the dust. He was so large and full, his leaves caught too much wind and it split him right down the middle. I think I cried when I saw his twisted and torn body in the street.

It was a sad day when my husband had to saw Bubba down to the ground. We just didn't have the heart to replace him. Sonny stands there alone and has continue to grow and thrive.

Then, a few years later, came an occasion to plant a new tree. This time she was a beautiful Ash tree that we planted in the backyard, where we hope our grandchildren will one day climb in her limbs. We simply named her "Ashlyn's Tree" in honor of our first grandchild, Ashlyn.

To Alshtromomy:

Spring is such a time of rebirth and beauty. A time of hope and beautiful flowers to come. May this be the Springtime of your life, with your upcoming surgery allowing your body and soul to flourish and thrive.
