Emocapella -- Putting the Motion Back in "Emotional."

The Bottom Line You don't know emo until you've heard these guys. Seriously.

So you're hip. You've heard of that Dashboard Confessional guy. You saw that Saves the Day video with the weird puppets. Maybe you even own a Jimmy Eat World album. Think you know all there is to know about emo?

Emocapella. If you don't know these guys, you don't know the half of it.

The idea sprouted from student Eric Denman's desire to start an all-male a-capella group. However, he didn't want to put on a striped suit and bum-bum-bum his way through "Mr. Sandman." No, he wanted rock-star jumps and metal-hands in the comfort of his favorite hoodie. And so, Emocapella was born.

The group is made up of fifteen or so George Washington University students, and has been around since the fall of 2001. While their first shows were generally around campus, they soon built up a huge underground following on the internet. This past fall not only brought them their first solo, sold-out show, but also got them an invitation to sing a couple numbers at a Taking Back Sunday show.

This isn't original material, but all the arrangements are brand-spankin' new (after all, where would one buy a voice-only arrangement of The Mr. T Experience's "Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend"). Don't let the name fool you... while they do take on Dashboard Confessional and The Weakerthans, they dabble in a bit of everything that is out of the ordinary, from Tenacious D's "F*ck Her Gently" to Snoop Dogg's "Next Episode." There's a little something here for everybody.

There aren't any plans for an album as of yet (not any publicized ones, anyway), but the site has tons of goodies to hold you over for the time being. Their site's multimedia section offers video footage from numerous performances in Windows Media format (although I have noticed that occasionally it will give an error saying the file was not found... right-clicking and saving the file to your computer will solve this problem). They also offer many mp3s from live performances, a mp3 from a radio interview with a Japanese radio station, and a buddy icon so you can let all your AOL Instant Messenger friends know just how cool you are.

This coming weekend also features their first East Coast tour (well, if the east coast consists of Philadelphia and New York City, anyway). If you are in these areas, I suggest you make plans to catch them at one of their published locations. For more info on these performances, to check out the mp3s, or maybe to wipe the tears rolling down behind those black frame glasses, check out their website:
