I have been an avid motorcyclist since 1965, and except for a few breaks when I was in school and too poor to own one, have been at it pretty consistently. In my 40's I started needing glasses all the time, and until recently wore my prescription glasses under oversized goggles. I had been meaning to look into prescription goggles, but kept putting it off. On December 17, 2006 I went to the motorcycle show in San Mateo, California where one of the booths was for www.eyelenses4u.com.
I found out that they use Panoptx, which is a major player in prescription motorcycle goggles. I picked out a cool wraparound black frame with removable foam padding, and waited while they ran my glasses through a machine to extract the prescription. I am farsighted, have a slight astigmatism, and need bifocals for reading maps. I also chose transitional lenses that darken in the sun so I wouldn't have to stop and change lenses or goggles for day and night driving. Out the door it was $263.00, less than my glasses, but more than the $190.00 I expected to pay. Yours will be less if you don't get bifocals and/or the transitionals.
I didn't get them until January 9, 2007, but tried them out the first weekend after that. Bad news was that at distance nothing was sharp, and after a few minutes I began getting a headache from the eye strain. I knew something was wrong, and my guess was that their machine had not picked up the astigmatism.
I e-mailed them, and after a few days got a response from Brad, the owner/optometry honcho there. He said to send them back with a copy of my official prescription to have the lenses replaced. I responded by saying that I should get the whole thing done at no cost to me, including shipping the goggles back. I shipped them back on the following Friday at a cost of $8.45 for priority mail and sufficient insurance.
Turnaround time was not as quick as Brad had said it would be, and, in the end, I had to e-mail them again to ask what was the status of the replacement and to remind them that I was expecting to be reimbursed for the $8.45 (I scanned the USPS receipt and attached it to that e-mail). In response I got an e-mail from Denise, the office manager, who said my goggles were in the mail and that they were considering whether or not to reimburse me.
The whole process of replacement and reimbursement took about 3 weeks total, but the goggles are just great now, and they did credit my Visa for $8.45. From ordering to getting the replacement was about 2 months, but if it hadn't been for the initial mistake in my prescription it would have been 3 weeks from start to finish.
They include a nice hard black ballistic nylon case for them, a microfiber cloth for cleaning the lenses, good instructions from Panoptx, and those things that fit on the earpieces and go behind your head to hold the goggles on safely.
I was at first inclined to give eyelenses4u.com a poor review because their communications with me were only in response to me bugging them as well as their initial recalcitrance about reimbursing me the $8.45 to ship the goggles back. In the end I think it was a learning experience in customer relations for them, and the goggles are just the greatest thing since God created water now that the prescription is right. The removable foam pads allow air to flow, but keep the dirt and windblasts away. If you pop the foam out you can wear them as sharp looking glasses. Yes, Virginia, I really like them.
Brad knows how to do it, but I think what happened is that the young person at the booth on 12/17/06 may not have been too skilled with the machine that reads prescriptions. On the whole I am happy as can be with these goggles, and I have to say that Brad and Denise have made a lifetime customer out of me. If you are in the market for prescription goggles, contact eyelenses4u.com and e-mail Brad. Tell him I sent you. Considering how testy I was at the beginning he'll be surprised. Be wise and stick with known brands like Panoptx or Wiley's.
