Sour Skittles: Have A Party For Your Taste Buds!

Written: Jul 17 '01 (Updated Jul 18 '01)
Pros:A great candy. Wonderful sour kick.
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: The powerful combination of sweet and sour living together in perfect harmony within one little candy, a wonderful addition to the Skittles family.

What do Van Halen without David Lee Roth, 90210 without Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty), Cheers without Ernie "Coach" Pantusso (Nicholas Colasanto), and the Chicago Bulls without Michael Jordan all have in common? None of the above were/are as good as they were before their change. Van Hallen lost that special centerpiece when David Lee Roth left the group, they were never the same group. 90210 was never the same show once Brenda left. Her bratty, self centered, and stuck up personality added a little something special to the show. It was a sad day on the set of Cheers on February 12, 1985 when Nicholas Colasanto (?Coach?) passed away. "Coach" was the witty old man behind the bar who was one of the anchors of the comedic cast, Cheers was never the same. Look what happened when Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls. They went from first to worst. It may be decades before the Bulls ever recover from losing Jordan. Each of these four scenarios illustrates how a simple change can turn a musical group, television show, and a professional sports team into near disasters of monumental proportion. Fortunately we do not have to live in the shadow of these four near disasters any longer, our savior, Mars Inc., has made a change to one of their products and this time it is for the good of all man/womankind. Run to your nearest 7-11, leap to your favorite candy machine, or skip to your local neighborhood candy dealer and pick up, drum roll please, Sour Skittles. Yes ladies and gentlemen I said Sour Skittles. Your favorite Skittle flavors now with an outside sour coating.

Sour Skittles are the little brother to the great and famous Original Fruit Skittles, in the red bag. Two other flavors came out prior to Sour Skittles they were Tropical Skittles, in the blue bag, and Wild Berry Skittles, in the purple bag. These two additional flavors are good eats but they don?t have anything on the powerful punch of Sour Skittles.

Sour Skittles Flavors:
- Green Apple
- Grape
- Lemon
- Orange
- Strawberry

Colour:
Each different flavor of Sour Skittle has its own unique colour. The green apple flavor has an apple green colour, the grape flavor has a purplish colour, the lemon flavor has a yellow colour, the orange flavor has a hint of orange colour, and the strawberry flavor has a red colour. The wrapper is a cross between the colours of lime and green apple.

Body:
The body of each Sour Skittle is similar to that of the Original Fruit Skittles, a small oval shaped candy noticeably similar to M & M?s or Reeses Pieces. But, the Sour Skittles are not smooth like the other three candies, they have a rough outer sugary coating. This rough outer sugary coating is where the Sour Skittles get their sour taste.

Nose:
Once you open a bag of Sour Skittles the sweet aroma begins its faithful journey up your nostrils. You begin to sense the taste of sourness begin to form on the taste buds of your tongue. The sent alone will make you pucker.

Taste:
The second you drop one of these bad boys on your tongue, the little sour hands connected to the little sour arms wrap themselves around your taste buds. Your tongue goes numb for a second and tears begin to form in your eyes. Just at that moment, like Mike Tyson throwing an upper cut, the Sour Skittles smack you with a mouthful of fruit flavor. Wow, this candy tastes good!

Finish:
The Sour Skittles leave a wonderful fruit finish in the mouth, but they also leave behind the remnants of a sour battle. A finish that includes a mouthful of fruit flavor with a little sour kick to it what can be better? This, of course, leaves you staring back at the bag getting ready to go head to head with this little power of sour.

How Does Sour Skittles Compare:
The white coats at Mars Inc. did a wonderful job in creating a great sour candy. When stacking Sour Skittles up against other sour candies it passes with flying colors. Sour Skittles have as much, if not more, of an initial sour punch than comparable sour candies. However, Sour Skittles lack in the longevity of their sour taste. My only complaint, if you want to call it that, is I would like the sourness of the candy to last longer.

Mars Inc. did a great job with their creation of Sour Skittles. As we look at this subtle, but very important, change to Skittles we must take our hats off to the folks at Mars Inc. Thank you Mars Inc. for creating Sour Skittles and in turn making my life more complete. Oh happy days are here again!
