Macresarf1's 10 Best Films of 2002

Despite chilling effects of Wars on Terrorism, The Patriot Act, the Great American Crusade to Central Asia and beyond, the Year 2002 in Movies was the best in decades.

Thank you, Nick. FAR FROM HEAVEN is best understood, I suppose, as a then and now movie. It juxtaposes the style, format, scenario of a 1950's "women's picture" with the attitudes and sensibilities of now. Rather like finding the meaning in the pattern of the wallpaper.

Not deep or anything, but like looking at a old print or holding an objet d'art, and seeing it with today's eyes.

Regards.

...eloquently supported, even though I confess I didn't "get" Far From Heaven at all.

A pleasure to read.

Dear Tyler: I fully agree. Brody has ascended the firmament on a nimble course. I saw him at a screening early last year, just an ordinary New York Joe, in an old field jacket and a watchcap.

Thank you for your comment.

Regards.

Dear Brian: Thank you.

If you will go to my full review of RIVERS AND TIDES, you will find a rather inspiring story of how the film is credited with almost singlehandedly saving one of the best and oldest art houses in San Francisco (The Roxie). After the success of the Goldsworthy film there, it spread through the City, and the Roxie helped undertake its distribution in the United States. I attach a rather elaborate long term showing schedule that has been organized, lasting until toward the end of this year.

The film is still in theatrical play. You might contact Roxie Releasing Corporation by Email to see if a similar schedule is in effect or being planned in your area.

Thank you again for the praise. Glad to have been of help.

Very Helpful in a quite direct sense, as i'm about to add the Pelosi/Bush film and Enigma to my Netflix queue. I already know they don't have Rivers and Tides, though, so once again i'm left jealous of the things reviewers actually get to go see; i've been a fan of Andy Goldsworthy for four years now, and then he gets to be in an inspiring documentary, and it's not screened bloody anywhere.

otherwise helped,

Dear jan: All the films on this list are really very, very good, including most of those I didn't comment on.

SKINS was one of quite a number of movies held up, I guess, in part for political reasons, after the attack on the Twin Towers. And for the promotion the film got, they might as well have sent it right to video.

[The plot involves an act of vandalism on a National Monument, and I notice that, last week, the Office of Homeland Security announced it was throwing a ring of guards around the Monument in question.]

Unless George really overplays his hand and tries to go into Iran right away, the chances are better than even, we will have to watch him at work for another five years. Despite the fact that Richard Pearl, the principal architect of The Plan ten years ago, retired yesterday to a quiet backroom in the Defense Department, after having been caught in the immense Communications Industry fraud, and essentially found trading with the "enemy," like Bush's grandfather.

It is disheartening to observe the great number of Americans who parrot the discredited Administration cliches about why we are in Iraq, when the truth is there if they will only turn over a rock. Meanwhile, young men and women are being killed and maimed on the orders of people like Pearl who would never wear military uniform except to a costume ball.

Thanks, Jan, for the welcome comment.

I've been dying to see Skins and now it's on video. Haven't seen the others, but Journeys With George sounds interesting, 'cept I hate looking at him!
