Pros: Funny, real love is there
Cons: classless
The Bottom Line: Although I don't think that young children should watch this I think that it is a very funny show for adults and teenagers.

I remember faintly when the Simpsons first came on television. Actually I remember when they were a little snippet segment on the Tracy Aulman show. I thought those little snippets were funny so when the show first aired many years ago, I tuned in. I watched it a few times and I laughed but a part of me was getting a little tired of the ill behaved Bart and the stupidity of the two people who were supposedly raising him. Besides it was on at the same time as one of my favorite shows at the time. Maybe Melrose place but I can’t really remember for sure.
If my loss of interest in the Simpsons wasn’t sealed quite enough there was a guy in my office at the time who had pointy blond hair like Bart and delighted in acting, and dressing like Bart as well. He seemed to delight in hanging out by my desk a lot and loved to fart in other people’s offices and then leave, and yes even I was a target of the fart and run. But the scary thing is I think the Bart clone may have had a crush on me, which made me the main audience for all of his goofy little pranks. I could not even imagine watching the Simpsons after all of that. Besides I really didn’t have to. I got a full report of the show from the Bart clone in the morning after the show had aired the night before. So although I didn’t watch the show I still knew what was going on at all times. This went on pretty for the first 5 years I worked for that company until I became pregnant then I think the Bart clone started taking my marriage a little more seriously and stopped bothering me as much.
Fast forward a few years. An episode of the Simpsons came on after one of the shows I was watching a couple of years ago. I realized I had left the remote in the other room and I was to lazy to get up and go get it so I just watched the Simpsons and low and behold, it was funny. It also caught the eyes of my children who were 2 and 3 at the time. They were to little to pick up on all of the bad stuff that goes on to them it was just a bunch of colorful cartoon people walking around looking kind of silly. I will say the Simpsons is not really a children’s cartoon, and I don’t feel that it should be classified as one. It is definitely an adult show. Now that my kids are able to pick up on things I don’t think that I will be having it on the TV when they are around, because although it is not meant for children, it is a cartoon after all and will catch the attention of young viewers. And if either of my children become a Bart clone I don’t think I will be able to control myself.
For anyone who has never watched this long running show I will explain the main characters. First there is Homer, the father. Homer works at the local nuclear power plant and does the minimum amount of work possible, he is a fat slovenly man with very little class and spends most of his spare time at the local pub. Then there is Marge the mother. She has a big blue head of hair, an annoying voice and is smarter than her husband although sometimes you wouldn’t know it. She is for the most part a devoted wife, who loves her husband and children. Then there is Bart, well Bart is definitely what they would call all boy. He is goof off, and one who cares mainly about himself, and he always has some kind of trouble making master plan going on in his little mind. Lisa is the charm of the family. She is basically a good kid who does well in school and loves to play her saxophone. Then there is baby Maggie who has basically been a baby for years now. Mostly she just slithers around sucking on a pacifier. They also have a dog that is an ex-gray hound racing dog.
Despite the obvious personality differences of the characters and the fact that they often think of their selves before anyone else you can see that this family does care for one another. Once in a while you will see a glimpse of love transpiring between the characters and though Homer is basically a goof he does not stand for any one or anything affecting his family. Same goes for Bart even though he often does things without thinking you do see most of the time that he does have a conscious and cares about his family as well.
Besides the Simpson family there are several other regular characters that make the show very funny to watch like the local rich guy and Homer’s boss, he is a ruthless old guy whose own age and physical condition affect him in ways that foil his evil plans. There are Homers bar buddies, and Bart’s friends, and in my opinion the best contrasting character of all is Flanders, Homers extremely perfect and perky next door neighbor.
The show is funny and most adults will identify with it. I also think that kids will think most of it is funny as well especially the parts where Bart steals the scenes, but I would not recommend this show for young children as some of the things that are demonstrated on this show are immoral, destructive, and possibly even dangerous if a child is copying something that they saw on the show.
The Simpsons deal with problems that most of us face on a day to day basis, they just never seem to handle things with a lot of intelligence, therefore funny circumstances always arise out of their activities. The Simpsons could be considered the best family source on what not to do. So if you decide to watch the Simpsons just put all of your class and civility on a shelf until later and just enjoy. If you take this show to seriously you may get offended but it is all in good fun, and should be used as escape from the real world. If anything you will surely think that you are a lot smarter after watching this show
