The Trials of Herbie (A nature w/o entry for Ahlstromomy)
Mar 29 '03
The Bottom Line This is a true story about me when I was still a young buck. If I saw it today I would do the same thing again. Hang in there Ahlstomomy.
This is an entry in my nature w/o for my beautiful wife Ahlstomomy who will be having surgery this Tuesday.
This story is about a young man who loved all of nature and animals in particular. It takes place at a resort of sorts. This resort was wooded and had campsites that people bought. The roads where dirt so they became very dusty in the dry summer months. Some people to keep the dust down would spread oil and a tar mixture on the roads. Well some person had done this and then the rains came making a tary and muddy mess on the roads.
It happens that a baby chipmunk got stuck in the tar and its entire tiny body was covered with tar. Looking out from the porch that was built from the trailer this young man we shall call him Dan saw this baby chipmunk squirming and trying to hang on to life. Well Dans heart swelled and knew he had to do something. It so happens his best friend was up at the camp with him at this time. They both donned ponchos and went trudging out into the pouring rain. I dont think Dans friend was as enthusiastic as Dan was about saving this Chippie, but being the good friend that he was he went along.
Dans Mom watched with a smile on her face knowing that she was bringing up a very loving and caring person. Well with an old towel that Dans Mom gave him he picked the Chipmunk up and dried him off. Well the poor thing was covered with tar so Dan and his friend tried to wash it off in a bucket of soapy water being extremely careful that they didnt get any in the chipmunks eyes. The soap they used had no perfumes or chemicals, as Dan knew this would harm to the Chipmunk. The Chipmunks heart was racing Dan could feel it, knowing the chipmunk we will call him Herbie was scared Dan talked to him soothingly trying to calm the poor thing down.
Dan found some seeds and put them in a dish and some water hoping that Herbie would eat, but Herbie did not seem interested. Dan tried everything to get the tar off this poor creature and get him to eat knowing he needed food for strength. Well night was coming so Dan and his buddy took an old box that held a case of soda and tore up some paper to line it. They delicately placed the Chipmunk in the box to rest for the night. That night before Dan lie down to sleep himself he said a special prayer for Herbie.
The next day Dan was anxious to see how Herbie was doing so he rushed out of the trailer to find out that over the night Herbie had died. Dan was devastated that one of Gods creatures suffered such a useless death. He ranted about how dust did not cause that many problems that people had to put stuff down that was harmful to our wild animals. Dans Mom and friend just listened I think they both knew the day before that Dans crusade to save the chipmunk would be futile. Heck I even knew it but I had to do something. (Yes, this story is about me many, many, years ago.)
Now of course my friend and I gave Herbie a proper burial. Now comes the happy part the next spring when Dan and his family came to open up camp Dan noticed a new baby maple tree growing where he and his friend buried Herbie. I thought it was great even though Herbie died uselessly God used his body to help fortify the earth and bring new life that baby maple stayed on the property. My parents no longer own the property so I dont know if that maple is still standing or not, but in my dreams it is.
As I mentioned this is an entry in my nature w/o for my wife Ahlstromomy who says she enjoys stories from my past. So before she goes in for surgery on Tuesday I thought I would share this with her and all of you.
It is also a message that we should think about what we are spraying, spreading, or discarding it might ruin something wonderful. Nature has blessed us with many beautiful things take time to enjoy them and lets keep them.
Honey I love you more than you will ever know. I will be by your side forever and after the surgery and recuperation I promise to be by your side when we try to improve our place and increase some of natures beauty.
I would like to thank all of those who have sent greetings through reviews and emails your messages. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated. I hope you will check all the wonderful reviews out that others have submitted on my profile page.
Thanks for reading the ramblings of a nature-loving freak.
