One of the best names in single malts, this 16 year old doesn't let you down one bit. When tasting a scotch, in particularly the finest of the single malts it is important to remember what one is looking for in the taste and the experience of the drink.
As an experienced drinker, you look for a distinct flavor, a natural taste, smoothness in the esophagus with the first breath afterward, good scent and if your like myself and most scotch drinkers the strong taste of peat.
The natural taste and texture, is perhaps the first thing I noticed about this drink. Rich and full, the malt seemed more dense and heavy than most single malts I've tasted. This gives much pleasure to the sip, adding a different feel.
However, the most profound impact this 16 year-old gives is it's aftertaste. Very strong and peaty, Lagavulin holds true to the taste of Islay (the area in which this scotch is distilled).
Lagavulin meaning "the hollow where the mill is" is definitely one of the better single malts out there. Along with Laphroig and Talisker, Oban and Ledaig, Lagavulin sits atop the scale of single malts.
But don't take my word for it, try it yourself.
