Blend in and enjoy Italy, don't try to Americanize it! With a little common sense & preparation, you'll be quite safe.

Good point! I haven't had the opportunity to venture into the Italian Countryside as of yet, but hope to do so someday. I'm sure one would get a better feel for the 'real' Italy by doing so.

Another reason to avoid the cities... (Reply to this comment)

Having travelled over a good portion of Italy, I have found that the activities you mention are primarily confined to the big cities - Venice, Milan, Bologna and Naples being the ones I've visited where I've been "uncomfortably" aware of pickpockets and similar criminal elements casing tourists.

Your advice is very welcome (and holds true for most other large cities). I'd only add that this is a good reason to get off the beaten path. Of course, you just have to go to certain cities for a day or so, but when I have the option, I try to spend a majority of my time in the countryside or in small cities.

....found the people incredibly friendly and helpful. Your advice though should be heeded. Common sense, as in traveling any big city, should be used. We did, one time, get accosted. My wife and I were just leaving the Vatican and a group of six or seven "Gypsies", suddenly surrounded us and started moving in. A few loud words and keeping them from getting too close did the trick. My walking cane seemed to help too.

This was in Rome and I suppose that was our one weekly experience. We had no problems in Florence or Venice where we spent a few days in each. The same for one day trips to Pisa, Assisi, Siena, and other hill top towns.

I strongly recommend traveling to Italy. It was truly a wonderful experience. We loved it.
