Watch Out for the CompUSA Custom Computers

Apr 04 '03

The Bottom Line Bottom line is that I believe these machines are e-machines without the labels.

I recently bought one of CompUSA's "custom" computers for a client because it wasn't the proprietary HP or Compaq and the price wasn't bad. Another lesson in "you get what you pay for." My client hadn't had it for 2 days when the power supply went bad. After a small hassle over the phone I took it to the store and they spent an hour or so with it before they gave me a new machine. What really erks me is that the tech kept trying to tell me that it was a power surge. I told him that my client had it on a surge protector and that the other peripherals on the surge protector (printer, speakers, monitor, cable modem & router) were fine, he tried to tell me that some surges might only hit one device on the surge protector and that I might have a faulty surge protector. Power supplies are the most prone component to go bad and for this guy to try and argue that it was a power surge (something that would relieve CompUSA of any liability) didn't sit right.
