The author's comments were accurate,but she only touched on Bavaria's cooking and recipes. Her review could be compared to a foreign visitor stopping in two American cities and declaring American cusine to be mostly junk food. Having spent time in Bavaria outside of Munich,I found the cusine to be world class. I stayed at a small B/B in the Bavarian Forest,and was served outstanding venison in a rich gravy, whole trout completely deep fried, a homemade dessert consisting of wild blueberries (tiny tiny berries) on a potatoe based lefse/tortilla??,sprinkled with white powered sugar (outstanding). Plum dumplings that tasted like apple pie. Krapphen or Grophens with raisins(a deep fried kind of pastry), white aspargus with a type of cream sauce. White radishes sliced the completely opposite way we Americans would slice a radish(from the top down thinly, gives a whole new flavor to the radish.Breads and rolls to die for, especially the lite Caraway rye bread.
I think Bavarian cusine has been given a bad rap,it can be a lot like French cooking, since Bavaria was allied with Napoleon in the early 1800s and a lot of recipes were borrowed from the French.(who everyone knows have the greatest cusine)Except no Bratwurstls,(pinky finger bratwurst,nothing like the Nurenburg brats)By the way Nurenburg is really not truly Bavarian,it was added later to Bavaria and was maybe part of Franconia?? (not exactly sure about this).Anyway cannot wait to hear comments from other readers.

Hey, icicle. I liked both the bratwurst and the bockwurst. I think the fact that I visited Germany in cold weather had much to do with the sort of food that appealled to me at the time. Nothing like a hot, greasy little sausage in the frigid cold...

Very nice piece. When I was in Germany, I fell in love with Bockwurst. Bratwurst disappointed me somewhat, although I did have it a few times...

I had a very sophisticated Austrian/German parentage on my mother's side. I also had a wonderful viennese friend when I lived in San Francisco and we loved to cook for each other. It's wonder I'm not as fat as my father (who was English/Native American) got.

some great memories of the dishes my grandmother used to cook. The only one I ever learned to make was her sauerbraten - can't be beat!

You're right. Absolutely no calories. Except in the sparkling mineral water. Stay away from that stuff and stick to the beer.

Yep, those Bavarian baked goods are killers. I was trying so hard to stay more or less on a diet. My resolve crumbled in at the site of a Bavarian apple cake. Have you got that recipe?

...but this review did. My favorite though, is the Jaegerschnitzel, a thin veal cutlet doused with a hearty mushroom gravy! Washed down with a good Pilsener - it doesn't get much better than that!
Suddenly, the granola bar in my desk drawer doesn't look so great!
