IT'S ALL ABOUT ME....CORPGENTS WRITE OFF

Apr 06 '03

The Bottom Line Actually my title is not quite applicable to me, as I try to put others first in my life. As always, I am just trying to be clever!

1) I am often disappointed with life because I have such high expectations for every thing! Be it a hotel room, a friend, a holiday, a birthday. I always expect the best. I believe that I have these expectations because I always do my best. I try to never disappoint and feel bad when I do. If it is your birthday, I will make the cake (or buy one from Neiman Marcus) buy you a present and wrap it with care. I do everything to the "enth degree." It is not that I am hard to please, as I love things like homemade cards and hugs "just because." I guess that I expect so much from myself that I extend that to others. I consider this a personality fault, one that I am not proud of at all.

2) My proudest and favorite moment in my life was the eulogy I gave my father at his funeral. I had the gift of time before he died, and prepared for this moment. As I practiced and rehearsed what I wrote, I never got through it without crying. When the moment came, as I stood in front of God and about 500 guests, with my husband by my side, I was calm, collected, and did not shed a tear. Funny thing, it was a rainy day, and in the middle of my speech, the sun came out, and a ray of light shined through the stained glass windows. I think my Father liked what I said!

3) The hardest thing I have ever done in my life was to give my father permission to die. I actually said those words to him. The poor guy, suffering from Parkinson's disease, lived for 18 days without any nourishment, only a strong will. The dying process took about three hours, and I was with him every moment. It began with his feet and inch by inch, each part of him gave up. His heart was the last to go. I watched and felt it happen. I tried to make his death memorable and beautiful. Frank Sinatra (his favorite) played softly in the background, I drank a glass of champagne and swabbed his mouth with a q-tip dipped in the bubbly. I held his hand and my mother's, and I really think I felt the angels enter the room when it happened. After he died, I bathed him with a mixture of water and Polo cologne. Then I packed his tuxedo in a suitcase for the funeral home. My father was going out in style!

3) I had two brothers and a sister who were killed in a fire 9 and a half months before I was born. The youngest was only 3 months old, and he and I share the same birthdate, April 1st. I hope that I have the pleasure of meeting them someday.

4) I had an idyllic childhood. Perfect but not privileged My husband likes to say that I am one of the few people he knows that came into adult life without baggage. I thank my parents for that. The only baggage I have can be found under my eyes after late nights writing things like this!

5) I was raised a Roman Catholic and went to parochial school for 12 years. And no, I wasn't allowed to wear patent leather shoes....only on Sundays. I know that my religious education has played a major role in who I am today. The nuns had a harsh way of giving us all a conscious. And mine usually keeps me on the right path. Today, I find myself angry with The Church, specifically with Priests, but certainly not with God. Going to church gives me a sense of comfort, but I never pray along with the congregation. I just kind of do my own thing and hope that it is good enough.

6) I am a people pleaser. I love making people happy. I have been told that I do it to a fault. I have only learned to say "no" two years ago. I cried after I did.

7) I have not been gainfully employed in 21 years. But my life has been very full. Prior to that I was a Public Relations Director for a Savings and Loan, and I felt that I had the best job in the world! I have raised a daughter, Meghan Eve (born on Christmas Eve), been very active in fundraising for The Latin School of Chicago and Children's Memorial Hospital. I would like to think I have made a difference in a few lives along the way.

8) I am currently dedicated to my Mother who at age 84, is still going strong. It is my desire to make the last years of her life simply wonderful! She is the kindest and strongest woman I have ever met. I am proud to be her daughter.

9) I love to dance! I have danced in many memorable places to include, the revolving dance floor of The Rainbow Room in New York, the helipad of The Conrad Hilton Hotel, under The Eiffel Tower, on the beach in Montego Bay, on my private balcony at The Ritz in Paris, at my Father's wake, and on stage with Michael Jackson! (But Corpgent already knew that)

10) I am a procrastinator. I am not proud of this fact. I put off all problems, hoping that they will just go away. Sometimes they do and it always amazes me.

11) You would never know it by looking at me, but every drawer I have is a mess! I simply cannot keep an organized drawer. Most people have one junk drawer. I have 20!

12) I am a very positive person. I play a little game with myself as I walk down the streets of Chicago. Each person I pass, I think of something positive about them. I find by thinking positive thoughts, positive energy comes my way.

13) I am a fancy girl. I love fanciful things. I set a pretty table every night, and try to make a creative presentation out of every meal. I wouldn't think of walking out the door without being dressed nicely and hair and face done. Perhaps it is a lack of confidence in myself, but I always want to project the "Best of Me". The downside of this, is that I don't do too many things that are spontaneous. I need to work on that.

14) Motherhood has not been easy for me. I take it very seriously and am very proud of my daughter. She has just told me that I was her best friend.

15) I am married to a man that I am very proud of and to whom I have been in love with for 33 years.

16) I always cry on my birthday.

17) I am deathly afraid of birds, especially chickens, pigeons, and sea gulls. I will cross a street (and not to get to the other side) to avoid a pigeon Paris, Florence, and Venice are hell for me.

18) When given an assignment or a project, one can expect me to complete it on time and beyond expectations. In fact while doing a project, I am totally focused often times, leaving other responsibilities go, as I complete the current task. I prefer to work by myself, as I don't easily trust others to be as capable as I am.

19) My husband and I race and breed race horses. We have been quite successful at times, over the years, having won several important stakes races. We owned the Illinois horse of the year in 1994, and hope to again this year.

20) I am a happy individual who is thankful for the good life I have been blessed with. The current economy is trying to burst my bubble, but I am resisting. Some might say that I "Don't Get it",. I get it all right......I just don't want it!

I have no idea why anyone might be interested in the above. I did this as a favor for my friend, George. It was more difficult than any review I have written to date! You owe me one, Georgie Boy! Thanks everyone!

My best,
Deborah~
