So who plays baseball? in the baseball W/O.

Apr 06 '03

The Bottom Line A great place to write about something I know very little about.

Now when Patti suggested a Write Off on 'baseball', I told her I would not be a good candidate. You ask 'Why', because I was born in England.

I tell all my friends that this is called 'rounders', and the girls play it in England. When I was a child the girls played 'netball', similar to Basketball, and I have to smile when I see these big guys playing girl's games.

The rules:
Well considering this was 47 years ago, when I played they are kind of fuzzy.
I can remember we stood on a marked area and had a long, round bat in our hand. Then another girl from the other side throw the ball to me. If I was lucky enough to hit it, I would run to the posts. We had 4 to run round, and depending on how far it was hit, how many we got to.

Then the next girl would hopefully hit the ball. When they started running I could continue running. This went on until all posts were run around. This was called a 'rounder'. We would play for a set amount of time, and then change over. This was both teams got to throw the ball, and bat.

This was a game I played but didn't really understand. My love was swimming, netball, running, and gym.

So what do I know about American Baseball. Mainly what I see on the television. They go on strike often. Want millions of dollars in salary. Boy, wouldn't we all. They chew tobacco, and can you believe, spit it out.

Some of them get mad and shout. They spend a lot of time looking before throwing the ball. They always seem to be playing against the same teams. Is this to get to know how to beat them.

American people are very proud of this sport and I do respect that. Just wish I knew why full grown men play a girl's game.

Okay Patti, if you ask me to delete this I fully understand. I really have no idea about baseball, and next time you are in Florida, you may want to take me to a game to explain. Hopefully they do play in the Tampa area. I am open to comments and suggestions. I know I am really in need of them.

I joined this W/O for fun. What do you expect from a girl who adores soccer (we call it football), cricket, tennis, and athletics. I am really looking forward to the other entries, as I know I can learn a lot from them. Then perhaps I can actually write about baseball.

Okay I asked Len if we have a team in the area. Yes, Tampa Bay has the Devil Rays. Has anyone heard of them.

I am hoping you will all read the other entries in this write off. I know they will give me, and others, some useful information, instead of an old women thinking back on her childhood.
