Truth (Reply to this comment)
by donc230
From his reporting on Hurricane Andrew we should have know that he was going to be a man for the ages. There was never a time when you didn't believe his reports were the "real" truth.
Your tribute underwrites his commitment
Thank you,
Don

I was saddened as well... (Reply to this comment)
by whalewatcher
His tragic and untimely death touches everyone who knew him, or of him. He gave his heart and soul to his job and will lovingly be remembered by all. I, too, watched his last reports and noticed what heavy toll his duty had taken. But his enthusiasm never wained. My heart goes out to his family, especially his 3 children. He so desperately wanted to spend more time with them, which is now never to be. How sad...

The tears won't stop flowing... (Reply to this comment)

Whenever I think I'm done crying, I see another report about David and the water works start again. Especially after reading your essay.
From someone who worked up close and personal with David, at WTVJ in Miami, I am in shock over his tragic death.
I am more shocked over the callous and rude comment from WBDbaj who wrote that your "essay was heartless".
Just because this particular casualty of war wasn't a soldier in combat, doesn't make it any less tragic or sad. Of course, we all feel for the soldiers who are dying in the battle but David died bringing the war into our living rooms every day and night.
He was FREE to report on the war without interference from the U.S. government because that's what America is about, freedom of speech.

Don't you think you are being the heartless one when you can't have feelings for someone who risked his life so that you can watch the war from the comforts of your living room?
Of course I feel deeply for the armed forces and their loved ones...I wish with all my heart each and every one of them come home safe and sound..

because although he did committ to the hazards, he was a civilian. I also wonder if it had happened somewhere civilized if he could have gotten to a hospital and survived. The whole thing is so sad. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. jo

This is so timely and so heartfelt! It expresses the feelings that most of us have.
My heart fairly breaks for his wife and children and for the sad, sad way his death came about.
Those who traveled with him there need our prayers and condolences, too. I cannot even imagine such a shock this must be with the world coming apart around them.
Thanks for this beautiful tribute.

heartsick... (Reply to this comment)
by RobinLynn
I have been heartsick over this tragic loss as well...I feel like I watched him mature right before my eyes here in South Florida and was so proud to see a local boy "make good" in such a big way. I was heartened to see the outpouring of love and respect from his fellow journalists...but wonder if it makes it any easier on his wife and 3 children.
War is hell....

David was one of my favorite reporters. I will surely miss him a lot.
All the networks have paid tribute to him, CBS, ABC, CNN, FOX, NBC. I saw all of them and was touched by all the kind words about him and his family.
I thank God that he died doing what he loved to do best. So, many people do not get that opportunity.
It was David who suggested strongly the embedded troops for this war NBC said and it was David who designed the camera's for the reporting that most of the reporters are using. Such an intelligent man.
God Bless his family.

An Example For the Rest of Us.... (Reply to this comment)
by tombarnes
A beautiful tribute to David Bloom, Barbara. It is truly sad to see some of the best and brightest falling along with our troops. I read recently about how he challenged a looter in a store during Hurricane Andrew. This took courage, as did going to the battle front. We need more like him. An example for the rest of us. Well done! Tom Barnes

Barbara, I cringe anytime I hear of another death. Any death, either side. Because there is still going to be family and friends in pain, and this saddens me.
You wrote a very touching review of a man that gave his life, getting us the news, I wish he hadn't become part of that news. My prayers are with his family as well as all those troops, and those left behind.
Thank you!

I saw that report and couldn't help but cry again..The tribute they did to him last night on MSNBC made me so upset I could hardly sleep.I kept seeing that photo in my mind of him with his wife and little girls..
To everyone who has left a comment I want to thank you so much, I never realised how much he meant to so many even if not from Miami!

When I heard this news yesterday morning, I nearly cried. David Bloom was one of my favorites. This morning driving to my office, I almost cried again, thinking of Katie Couric telling how Bloom just loved a dress that Katie bought for her little girl, and asked her, long distance, if she could order three of them for his little girls.

I was saddened when I saw it on the news this morning. I was even more saddened when I read your excellent story. It always hits harder and deeper when you know someone personally. Your loss and sorrow are so evident in your report - I hope his family sees it for they will be proud.
I remember when Ernie Pyle died in WWII. I felt that I had lost a good friend. War reporting has to be hard - they are subject to the risks, but do not have the means of self defense. I thank you for making the story of this remarkable young man so vivid for the rest of us.

for sharing this story. I've always admired David and I spent most of the day in shock at his death --- he was that rare reporter who could present both sides of the story, allowing the audience to make up its own mind. He was great on the White House beat, but his reporting from Iraq took us all there. I admired his work on air and he was a genuine treasure as a human being from everything I've heard about him. Thanks, very much, for your thoughtful tribute to a great American.

I was relieved that it was "natural causes" rather than war related, but I hadn't heard about the close quarters, etc.

Thanks for mentioning what an embolism is, I was not really sure and should have looked it up.
This evening when my kids go to sleep I can catch up on the news, but I too am saddened by the loss and did notice how beaten up he had looked after being in the trenches for awhile.
I had no idea he was younger than me either.
