And The "Twenty Things" Continues....

Apr 07 '03

The Bottom Line Oh no. More revelations about myself. I feel naked and stuff.

I don't know corpgent however, I did notice that several of my buds had been participating in his little exercise of revealing twenty things about themselves.

Then last night, he pops into my mailbox, extending the offer to me.

I thought, people pretty much know tons about me. What could I tell them that they didn't already know? Well, I did manage to come up with some stuff, so read on.

1. I was born on October 12, 1966 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. My mother was 17 and my father was 21. I was a very planned event. My parents wanted to be together and my mother's parents didn't want that to occur. They thought the best way to seal the deal was to get pregnant so that they had to get married.

2. My first memory is of being two years old and in Straight Creek, Kentucky. I was at my grandmother's house (really, a shack). By the way - she had no indoor plumbing, just an outhouse. All water was found to be in a well, accessible on the front porch. Anyway, I remember leaning over the railing on the back porch and my grandmother pulled me back, and told me to be careful. I peered over the edge and saw that it was a long way down into a field of weeds. That's my first memory folks.

3. The first death that hurt me like no tomorrow was the death of my collie-Shepard mixed dog, Skipper. We came home one Sunday afternoon and found that he had been shot and stuffed under our garage door. I loved Skipper more than any other dog I've had since.

4. When I was in first grade, I was first placed in the lowest level reading group called the "Fish". As soon as I realized that, I did everything in my power to get to the top group - the "Clowns". That took a matter of weeks. And I wasn't satisfied then. By the time first grade was over, I had already completed the fourth grader reading materials and they weren't sure if they were comfortable with putting me in with a bunch of fifth graders for that period of time.

5. I loved girl scouts. In fourth grade, I was allowed to sell cookies. I remember the sales sheet oh so well. It cost $1.25 per box and at that time, we sold six different flavors - Samoa’s, Thin Mints, Vachons (those were the chocolate and vanilla sandwich cookies), Dosidos, Tagalongs, and Shortbread. I sold enough boxes of cookies to go to Girl Scout camp for three years in a row. I was quite proud of myself because I would have never been able to go otherwise. And no, I didn't have any help from my parents. This was a time in life when it was safe to go door to door and believe me, I did. I would come home from school every night during that period and find the business :).

6. The first time I hated my mother was in fourth grade. She had all of my hair cut off into some sort of shag. Pictures from that period of time are just horrible to look at.

7. In fourth grade, I started taking guitar lessons from Mr. Koczergo. By the way, he was massively good looking! I learned a lot from him and six months later, I was able to play and sing in mass. I did that for four years and it was the most connected I've ever felt to organized religion.

8. In fifth grade, I started breaking out into hives for no apparent reason. Later in life, I understood the reason why. It was a reaction I had to feeling out of control in life. I occasionally get those hives even today.

9. The second time I hated my mother was when she left my father (that was fine), and moved us in with another man. She lied to me for no good reason. It was a Friday evening and she told us that this co-worker of hers had lent us his apartment until we could find one of our own. I was okay with that. Then he came home. What I wasn't okay with is that she promised that there was nothing going on with him and then when I woke up at 6am the next morning to get ready for my caddying job at Orchard Ridge Country Club, I found her in bed with him. I wasn't upset that she was with him. I was upset that she lied to me.

10. Starting in eighth grade, I used to crawl out of my bedroom window to go to clubs. It wasn't to pick up guys. It was to dance. Music was like a second skin to me and I just felt the need to dance my butt off, surrounded by loud music, as often as possible.

11. The first guy I fell in love with was Elliot Fulton Myers - December 9, 1981. I was in ninth grade then, just in case you wondered. I met him at a state competition in Madisonville, Kentucky. He was a fantastic jazz saxophonist and until I met my husband, he was the best kisser in the world. I loved him a lot and will never forget the impact that he had on my life.

12. My most favorite shoes in the world were the ones I had while a senior in high school. My grandparents bought me a pair of lavender Nikes. I still have those shoes somewhere today. They were the coolest.

13. The men that I feel most comfortable with in life are gay men. In fact, I'm wildly attracted to them. In high school, I hung out with David who at first, was a boyfriend but then later became my best friend. The next guy I dated ended up coming out later in life. During the time we were together, it was fantastic in so many ways.

14. When I graduated from high school, I was all ready to attend Murray State University (Murray, Tennessee), on a full scholarship for music. Music and band had shaped my life tremendously and it just seemed natural to do that for the rest of my life. I let my boyfriend talk me out of going. Biggest mistake I've made in my life to date.

15. In college, I made a name for myself. I became President of the Student Body and was able to make my way in to a couple of State board for Indiana - State of Indiana Commission for Higher Education and State of Indiana Scholarship and Financial Aids. I really enjoyed my time on these boards because I was able to contribute to the policies of the state that are still in effect today.

16. My very favorite color in the world is purple followed closely by green. Purple makes me feel happy. Green makes me feel pure.

17. No matter how old I get, I still feel like I'm 15.

18. My insecurities are sometimes misunderstood as arrogance. The older I get, the better I am at helping people understand that.

19. I'm an eternal optimist. I believe that people are mostly good. I believe that no matter how horrible things get, they will get better. I would give my worst enemy the shirt off of my back (as long as I had a bra on). I just have this love of people and of relationships that rule my head and heart.

20. If I died tomorrow, I would have very few regrets about my life. Although I've made many mistakes, I've learned from them and have grown quite a bit. You could almost say that at this moment, I'm at peace with where I am.
