Hello Fellow Virgo! (Reply to this comment)
by misc_el
Our birthday's are a few days apart.
You know, I was terribly shy as a small child. Actually I was picked on some, not much, but some. Then when I began highschool I became a bully.
I mean straight bully. No sugar coating on it. I was really mean.
I had a lot of issue's with myself, my life and my self confidence. (I won't go into all of that now, but I hated myself and took it out on others).
One time I beat a girl and made her kneel in a mud puddle and ask for my forgiveness (she was talking bad about t friend and...it was stupid). It makes me well up to think about how terrible that was to do.
I out grew it, one day I ran into that girl. I told her I was sorry...I carried that weight FOR YEARS. She was so sweet about it, acted like it was no big deal but I got the feeling it was a big deal to her. I told her how terrible it was and how awful I felt and how I regretted much of my behavior from High School. I still hope she doesn't hate me. I hope she is as forgiving and understanding as you.
Anyway, I had a lot of issue's with anger for years. I'll have to write about it one day, maybe it will help someone? Who knows?
Thank you so much for sharing your story,
X's and O's

I have read a very interesting review, always nice to learn about others. I'm the Queen of picky eaters, maybe we need a club?
Nice to meet you, glad you joined this W/O

Hey Dave,
Good stuff. Another successful on-line marriage.
My treat is to go to the local TGIF, or Ruby Tuesdays, I get them mixed up, and have a California burger with fries. They actually have Heinz ketchup and French´s mustard. Delicacies in these here parts.
Pulling for the Canucks tonight. I´m hoping the last game lit some fires.
My Wild lost a close one today, but Edmonton went up 2-0 on the Wings! Could be a Wild ride!
Enjoyed the review.

If you're from Iowa (Reply to this comment)
by Horswispr
you're OK with me! I lived in Grinnell for seven years, and spent some time in Iowa City, Des Moines, and other places there. Loved the people. And hey, there is no such thing as entirely functional. Those kids who picked on you for being smart? That ain't functional. That's lame. But I'm glad you had a couple of friends who stuck by you, Star Trek and all. Thanks for the intro!

Hi Patti!
I figured you'd probably be leaving something, but I completely understand how that happens. Sometimes I forget to rate but I leave a comment, sometimes the other way around. Sometimes the site craps out on me and then I forget to go back and leave the comment I meant to leave.
I really do enjoy your Trek reviews, because they make me think about episodes I haven't seen in ages. Most of the time I'm in agreement with you, at least as far as how good the episode is. We may disagree completely on why, though. :-) Then, of course, there is The Royale. :-)

Meant to get back to you (Reply to this comment)
by AliventiAsylum
yesterday afternoon, but got distracted. It happens.
Your comments are always appreciated on my reviews. You never fail to make me think even harder about an episode that I've already tried to analyze as best I could.
My former minister (and very close friend) was from Davenport as well. Can't think of the church she was ordained in off the top of my head.

One condition, though.
You have to give it back in at least slightly useable condition.
Either that, or I have to be there the whole time. :-)

Lori honey, you can hijack anything of mine that you want. :-)
Of course, expect me to turn my head while you inspect Andy's posterior. I have no interest in that subject.

DO IT! But, you must include something about your picturesque posterior.. I know you re-evaluated it, but I think us gals should be the judge of that!

You're from Davenport too! Cool! I went to Davenport West and lived up between Locust St and Central Park. Where were you?
I really appreciate the compliment that you gave me. I'm not as dedicated to my writing as I should be, but I do try the best I can and I value people's opinions of it.
As to the rest, I'm glad we're so much alike. :-) I eat peanut butter and jelly now. I can't imagine eating butter with it anymore. Especially on those hot summer days when the butter would melt and mix in with the peanut butter. Gross! But I loved it then. *shakes head*

Looking forward to your entry, Andy!
My brother and I have a strange relationship. I was somebody to pick on when we both lived at home. When he moved away to college and came home on a weekend, it was the same thing. But we would stay up on Friday and Saturday nights and watch music videos and we would have some wonderful conversations. I went to the same university as him, and he was a rock of support while I was there. And then, of course, there was letting me move in with him and his wife when they moved into their new place. I know I said in my piece that it was my sister-in-law, but I'm sure the sentiment came from both of them.
And I had a great role-playing group, too, though our DM was a bit whacked out. :-)

Yeah, I really like Davenport. There really wasn't a lot for me there as far as a future, but I still find it a beautiful place to come from. Especially down by the water. Some of my fondest memories are going to the Blues Festival that's down by river.
Thanks, Moppy!

Hi Lisa!
Yeah, I really enjoyed Little League. I was in it as long as I was eligible, and then I went onto Pony League. Did that for two years, and then tried out for my high school team. Didn't make it, and I never tried again.
I miss those times occasionally. One of my last days in Chicago, I walked down to the park and watched some Little League games. I hadn't done that since I stopped playing. It was quite the experience.
I'm glad you enjoyed reading it. :-)

Hi Deborah
Thank you for reading. I don't know how charitable I was, but I am sad that the "cool when not with the other one" guy was the one that was killed.
As for your theory about anger, maybe that's it and I tapped into it without even knowing. :-)
Thank you for your comment.

random coincidences (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
Heya! I've never accidentally met anyone else raised in Davenport, Iowa since i moved to Boston - it's my hometown too (what part did you live in?). You're also barely three years older than i am, which surprises me in a way i mean as praise: you seem older, in that you write as though you've experienced a lot and learned from most of it. Also, Deist is a cool religious label that applies to me, and i had my own phase of eating so many peanut butter sandwiches that i've barely been able to tolerate them ever since. None of which is important, but all of which strikes me as kinda neat.
cheers,
-Brian

I might just have to crash the W/O myself.
Ditto on the older brother thing. But I've more or less reconciled myself to it. We even work for the same university. Strangely enough, despite the anxiety of influence, he's always been a best friend.
Compared to many my life has also been mundane. No horror stories. No survival against all odds. I was also a smart kid, but I was lucky enough to have friends who stood by me. I guess we fell into the cliched group of buddies: the jock, the joker, the wrong-side-of-the-tracks kid, and the brain. At least we made a good role-playing group!

obstacles some of these people have overcome and I am awed. Glad you met such a wonderful mate on the net. I go through Davenport on the way to Chicago from Omaha. Spend the night at Coralville
and go to the outlets at Williamsburg. Beautiful country right on the old Mississippi.
Enjoyed your review

Hi... (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for sharing! This was a fun read. Little League?! Yeah! My oldest daughter plays third base - fastpitch, played in the 9/10 All-stars. Considering that I am on our local Little League Board of Directors... that tidbit sparked my attention. Actually other mentions did to, and as I mentioned, I enjoyed reading this! Take care!
Sincerely,
Lisa

David, thank you for this very honest and revealing glimpse of you. I hated to read about the childhood misery with the two jerks in your life. How forgiving of you to wish them well now!
Regarding the anger thing; I feel that anger is just a cover for sadness and hurt. I do not get angry either. Negative energy. I just cut to the chase and express my sadness. Aren't we wise?
So nice to meet you!

I really enjoyed reading this list! Living here in Northern Virginia, I can certainly relate to #14, the bad drivers issue. Got my gun ready... need some help? LOL

Thanks for sharing this, Dave ~
