From The Cradle To The Grave-20 Or So Facts About Me-Corpgent's W/O

Apr 10 '03

The Bottom Line I heard a quote by someone that says that one of man's greatest desires is to know and be known by others. Thanks for the forum, Corpgent!

This W/O caught my eye as I began seeing so many of my favorite Epinions members submitting entries. I feel that I know so much more about so many of my fellow Epinionaters now! Although I have never been a particularly outgoing person, I decided to respond in kind, and reveal a few personal tidbits about myself.

I was born in Pensacola, Florida at the U.S. Naval Hospital. My mother told me that right after I was born, I looked up at her with a serious gaze and furrowed brow, as if I knew exactly what was going on. I have the photograph to prove it. I have often been referred to a "level headed." The photo speaks for itself.

I grew up on the Florida gulf coast, but never really appreciated it until I moved away. Now I crave the serenity I find in those sandy white beaches and aquamarine waters, and spend as much time there resting and relaxing as possible.

I am an Adult Child Of An Alcoholic (ACOA) (father) and bear all of the usual battle scars. Due to my traumatic childhood experiences, I am, at times, plagued with low self-esteem, insecurity, and anxiety.

After having been baptized as a child, I had drifted away from God and the church. I began to develop a longing for spiritual meaning in my life, and rededicated my life to Jesus Christ some 20 years ago and have never looked back. I'm still a work in progress, but I am being rebuilt by the Master Carpenter.

In the 3rd grade, I was surprised by my first kiss from a freckle faced Huck Finn look-a-like named Corky Clark. I was sitting in a swing on the playground at recess when it happened. It's something I will never forget.

I didn't date in high school, but spent most of my weekends earning money babysitting.

In undergraduate school at Huntingdon College, I majored in Social Work and minored in English. During my internship, I worked in a prison and interviewed all manner of criminals, and had access to all of the records of the inmates throughout the prison system. Some of them would make good material for a Stephen King novel. I worked with quadriplegics in an Independent Living Center en route to earning a MS degree in Rehabilitation Services at Florida State University.

I was married for the first and only time at the ripe old age of 35, and am glad I waited. My husband and I are an odd couple. We've reversed roles, he does the the majority of the cooking while I watch sports on television. His sister once told him jokingly that he would make someone a good wife one day, I'm glad it's me.

Like the heroine in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I have had a big physical make over. I wore braces for 4 years as an adult and no longer have an overbite. I wore coke bottle sized glasses until I was around 30 and changed to contact lenses. I finally saw the light and had Lasik surgery 2 1/2 years ago. I now have 20/20 vision and only wear glasses for reading and computer work.

I was a tomboy growing up, collecting baseball cards instead of dolls, although I did have a Ken and Barbie doll complete with a pink sports car. I still have the baseball card collection (which is probably worth a mint), but I no longer have the dolls.

My mother taught me to be an excellent money manager. I buy low mileage, late model, used vehicles and pay cash rather than financing a loan. I pay off all of my credit cards each month, clip coupons, follow a budget, and I have more money in savings (401k, IRAs, Mutual Funds, Money Market Accounts) than I owe to creditors, including my home mortgage lender.

Even though I'm a good money manager, I cannot balance a checkbook. My calculator and check book are the victims of some of my worst temper tantrums. When I get to within $15-$20 dollars of balancing, I give up. This is why I did not major in math.

I have a foot fetish. A foot massage, for me, is almost an orgasmic experience.

For 20 years I lived in Atlanta, Georgia until the traffic and congestion got the best of me. Combined with my Type A personality, the stress of big city life had me headed straight toward a heart attack. My husband and I moved 2 hours north to Tennessee almost four years ago, and are enjoying a much more laid back lifestyle.

Now that I'm in a smaller, more close knit community, I have become involved in a lot of volunteer projects. I especially enjoy working with elementary age kids and elderly adults. I can't wait to retire so I can spend more time volunteering.

I am a pack rat. I save magazines for ages, even though I know I'll never get around to reading them. I collect souvenir spoons and display them in a rack in my dining room. I have spoons from Scotland, Germany, England, France, Holland, Switzerland, and Italy; most of which I purchased during my two trips to Europe. Some of them are gifts from friends and family.

I was extremely shy as a child, but I've overcompensated, to the point of being almost too direct at times. Some people appreciate this, and others don't. At least with me, you know where you stand, and what you see is what you get.

My favorite type of cuisine is seafood. It's very difficult to find good seafood in my area, so I gorge myself when I go home to visit my family in Florida.

One of my greatest pleasures in life is sleeping late on Saturday mornings, even though I'm usually up by 8:30 or 9:00 am. I get up and do all my household chores and spend the rest of day relaxing watching movies or sports, unless I have errands to run.

At times I can be very compulsive. I am almost never late, and in fact, I will probably even find a way to be early for my own funeral!
