The Bottom Line I hate the letter 'x'

Jump back to X

At last, the much awaited entry for the letter ‘x’ for "The Epinions Film Dictionary W/O”. The amount of pleasure I’ve derived from trying to come up with suitable submissions has been positively euphoric, I can tell ya. I warn you all now, this isn’t going to be the longest Epinion you’ll ever read.

But wait, I forgot, some of you may not know what the heck I’m on about. “What is this ‘Film Dictionary’, Crisp?” I hear you ask. Oh, silly you, how could you not know by now? But I’ll forgive you and fill you in:

Basically, I asked much trusted members of the Epinions community (and when they declined, pretty much anyone and everyone) to come up with a reference guide to anything relating to films, be it films, actors, directors, lines of dialogue, names of critics… generally anything ever that could be associated with films. As a rule, I needed 26 writers, but amassed only 23, which is why millinocket, Vormancian and myself have been given two letters to write about.

Remember though, be kind: this isn’t the definitive guide to everything you could wish to know about films. It’s just a bit of fun really; so don’t get your knickers in a twist if your favourite thing ever has been forgotten. If you’re nice, you can always leave a comment about it and we’ll see what we can do. For a full of participants, flip back to my profile page, but rest assured that when everyone has posted there will be in-review links to the letters immediately before and after the current one. I hope.

So then, what do you want to know about the letter ‘x’? Hopefully not much:

X-4 Project, The; working title for the Sandler, Adam/Anderson, P.T film Punch-Drunk Love (2002), an offbeat romantic comedy that is utterly fascinating, not purely down to its premise (a social loser who becomes obsessed with collecting frequent flier miles by eating pudding cups), but because it features a brilliantly mesmerising performance from the often crap Sandler

Xanadu (1980); The gayest film ever? Come on - it's a neon-lit disco musical featuring the rollerskating pairing of Newton-John, Olivia and Kelly, Gene.

Xander; geeky yet strangely likeable kid from the TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), a class piece of television that thankfully bears no resemblance to the dreary 1992 film of the same name.

Xavier, Charles; bald dude from the X-Men flick, a role that you can bet your left nut that only Stewart, Patrick was considered to play.

Xena (1995 – 2001); TV show starring the unfathomably butch Lawless, Lucy about a warrior princess who kicks seven bells out of men, which may or may not have had anything to do with the characters alleged lesbianism. Eye-candy young sidekick only strengthened these claims. Rumours of it being made into a film circulated until people cottoned on to how crap it really was.

X-Files; popular (but now defunct) TV show that spawned a film (1998) made famous for its two leads locking lips, an event that caused millions of nerds worldwide to spontaneously combust with excitement.

Xiang ji mao yi yang fei (2002); nothing to say about this one, except that if you translate the title directly into English it means “Fly Like a Chicken Feather”.

X-Men (2000); quality action flick about a group of mutants who are divided between saving mankind, or killing it off. Not to be confused with the occupants of The Oval Office.

X-Tro (1983); obnoxious sci-fi horror about some dude whose wife and kids get abducted by aliens. Spawned a sequel in 1990 that wasn’t so much inspired by Aliens (1986) as a complete and utter re-write. A crap one at that.

XXX – 1); the kind of film most red-blooded males prefer, usually involving two women getting curious with cucumbers.
2) The kind of film nobody prefers, a turgid Diesel, Vin vehicle from 2002 that actually believed it could dethrone the James Bond franchise, but turned out to be worse than any Seagal, Steven film ever.

That’s it. Anyone else got any other ‘x’ submissions, cos I sure haven’t? Leave a comment if you can do better
