"The Epinions Film Dictionary W/O" The Letter E

Apr 11 '03

The Bottom Line The word "ectoplasm" begins with E.

Before I jump into my comprehensive analysis of all things related to movies that begin with E, let me invite you to check out all the other entries in this writeoff started by the one, the only Simply_Crispy. Every letter of the alphabet has been meticulously analyzed by a whole score of writers here, and all are worthy of your time and attention. So without further rambling, I present the letter E...

Eastman, George
Inventor responsible for the invention of the first celluloid film and Number 1 Kodak camera.

Eastwood, Clint
American actor/director best known for his portrayals of macho bad boy protagonists in films such as DIRTY HARRY, Sergio Leone's western trilogy, and the great western-musical PAINT YOUR WAGON. Won an Oscar for directing UNFORGIVEN in 1992. Eastwood films that begin with E include the EIGER SANCTION, THE ENFORCER and EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE.

EASY RIDER
The ultimate 1960s road movie, this surprise box-office hit led the way for youth culture films to be produced in large quantities. Breakthrough film for Hopper, Dennis and Nicholson, Jack.

Edison, Thomas
Inventor responsible for the first motion picture camera. Started his own film company shortly thereafter which essentially launched the film industry as we know it.

Editing
Job responsibility that involves splicing film together to form a coherent (or incoherent as the case may be) succession of images. This job is performed by the Editor. Editing is one of the more prestigious behind the scenes jobs in the industry, and an Oscar is given out every year for the best film editing.

Educational Films
Films that purport to teach the viewer something. Also known as a Documentary.
Example:ENDLESS SUMMER
Bruce Brown's vintage surfing documentary, and a film that anyone who saw BLUE CRUSH owes it to themselves to see. Amazing location photography and lots of surf footage, as well as an interesting look at 1960s culture.

ED WOOD
Tim Burton-directed fictionalized biography of the infamous director of such films as PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. Actually, this one is pretty true to Wood's life, and is an interesting look at no-budget filmmaking in the late 1950s.

Effects
General term used to describe any type of special visual elements included in a feature film. There are several types of effects including special effects, make-up effects, and visual effects. Today, effects are usually created by using computer software, much to my personal dismay.

8 1/2; EIGHT AND A HALF
Masterpiece directed by Italian Federico Fellini that is among the most personal films ever created since it tells the story of a movie director struggling to find ideas for his next film.

8mm; Eight Millimeter
1. Popular film stock used mainly in independent and/or home filmmaking that has become antiquated in the wake of 16 and 35 millimeter film. 8, Super was also used.
2. Rather shoddy 1999 film starring Cage, Nicholas.

Eisenstein, Sergei
Soviet director equally well known for his books on film technique and for his use of symbolism in his films. Introduced the world to RUSSIAN MONTAGE editing style based in five ways to organize shots during editing. Among his films: IVAN THE TERRIBLE, POTEMKIN, OCTOBER: 10 DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD. Persecuted in his native country due to perceived anti-Stalin content in his films, eventually, he was forced out of the film industry after making only seven features and died at the age of 50.

EL
First word of film titles that usually signifies that the film is of foreign, particularly Spanish, origin. Often the use of 'El' in the title signifies a western connotation.
Example:EL TOPO
Weird 1970 film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky that presents a biblical story as a western. Features the usually heavy doses of violence found in spaghetti westerns, but operates on an entirely different level, filled with deep symbolism.
Example:EL MARIACHI
This extremely low-budget Spanish-language action picture was the directorial debut of Richard (FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, SPY KIDS) Rodriquez. A surprise hit after it was well received by critics.

Elvira(Cassandra Peterson)
Horror movie host whose commentary was featured on some cable versions of low budget horror films. Also made a few movies including the recent ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS. Had an early film appearance, and a nude scene, in the 1973 film THE WORKING GIRLS, also known on video as ELVIRA NAKED (!).

Elvis(Elvis Presley)
Rock and roll pioneer who then made a transition into film. Star of such musicals as JAILHOUSE ROCK, VIVA LAS VEGAS, many others. Title that begins with E: EASY COME, EASY GO.

EMPIRE OF THE ANTS
1977 science-fiction flick directed by Bert I. Gordon dealing with giant ants. Why include this? Because it is entertaining for all the wrong reasons.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Second in the original STAR WARS trilogy, featuring the startling revelations that Darth Vader is -gasp!- Luke Skywalker's father! Oops, am I giving something away?

End Credits
Signal that all but the most dedicated film goers can now leave the theater, this list of all cast and crew members for the film usually are run past the camera while the soundtrack is played.

Entertaining
A measure of how amusing a film is. Films range from being a high of being entertaining, very to a low of being entertaining, not.
Example: Entertaining, Very
EEGAH!
Arch Hall Jr. stars in this horror/sci-fi/comedy/musical about a caveman on the prowl in the desert. Features an appearance by future James Bond-star Richard Kiel as the caveman and multiple musical numbers by wannabe pop idol Hall, Jr. Falls into the "so bad, it's good" category, but it is definitely entertaining.
Example: Entertaining, Not
ENOUGH
Lousy JLo vehicle featuring the usual shoddy storyline replaced by the "feature" of having a starring role for actress/MTV personality/musician/hoe Jennifer Lopez. See this one at your own risk.

Epic
Term used to describe movies that run longer than 120 minutes or so. Epics frequently feature Heston, Charlton in a starring role.
Example: EL CID
Heston stars as Spanish hero Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar in this 182 minute film.

Epinions.com
Wonderful website featuring movie reviews by high paid professional movie critics (yeah!!).

ERIN BROKOVICH
Another critical darling film; Julia Roberts won Best Actress for her performance in this one.

Ernest
1. First name of actor Borgnine
2. Long-running series of incredibly juvenile and stupid comedies starring the late Jim Varney, especially popular in the 1980s when they were released theatrically instead of being direct-to-video fare.

Erotic Films
Films marked by their propensity to feature loads of gratuitous sex and nudity that, supposedly, are justified in their stories about seduction, lust, and sexual frustration.
Example: EMBRACE OF THE VAMPIRE
Supposed vampire film is actually just an excuse to feature Alyssa Milano in a nude scene every ten minutes or so.

Erotic Thriller
Films having the same basic storyline as BASIC INSTINCT and star Shannon Tweed.

Escape
Films that begin with escape usually involve a bad-boy protagonist trying to evade some form of authority. Often, 'Escape' films are of the action or science fiction variety.
Example: ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
John Carpenter-directed science fiction tale of Snake Plisken (Kurt Russell) trying to rescue the president who has crash landed in the self-surviving prison of New York City. Features a supporting role from the great Ernest Borgnine.
Example: ESCAPE FROM THE BRONX
Italian ripoff of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK directed by Enzo G. Castellari. Gangs try to keep their lives in the maelstrom of violence that is futuristic NYC.

Establishing Shot
Initial shot of a film, or the first shot of a scene which is usually taken at long shot or extreme long shot distance. This shot gives us an idea of the location in which the film and/or the scene will take place.

Estevez
Surname of a particular family of American screen actors, two of which adopted the surname 'Sheen' in favor of the Estevez moniker.

E.T. THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL
Steven Spielberg's second alien story is this film that is required viewing for any kid. This film had a lasting impact on American culture ("E.T. phone home" uttered in the most pathetic, gravelly voice you can muster) and further solidified Spielberg's standing as one of the most respected modern American directors.

Euro-horror
Term used to describe horror films produced in Europe. Frequently include violence and sex the likes of which are unheard of in their American counterparts. Eurohorror films have become increasingly popular in recent years.
Example: EATEN ALIVE
Italian cannibal movie directed by Umberto Lenzi that has the maximum amount of violence crammed into it. Also falls into the Entertaining for all the wrong reasons category.

European Films
Films produced on the European continent. European films are generally more artistic than their American counterparts, and often can be viewed for their aesthetic value as well as their ability to entertain an audience.

THE EVIL DEAD
Sam Raimi-directed horror/comedy that made Bruce Campbell a hero to all who saw it and spawned two sequels. Features cheesy, yet effective special effects, gore galore, and black humor in abundance. You can't really call yourself a horror fan without having first seen this series. On the downside, SPIDER-MAN was produced.

EXCALIBUR
John Boorman's retelling of the story of King Arthur complete with lots of sex and graphic violence. Fantastic visuals, though.

Exciting
Term used to describe films that hold the viewer's attention for the entire run time. Usually filled with lots of action, quirky dialog, and appropriate doses of humor.
Example:ENTER THE DRAGON
Quintessential Bruce Lee action flick. Features many incredible fight scenes.

Exciting, Not Very
Films that are boring, filled with long stretches of nonexistent action, loaded with banal dialog. These films are usually best suited for use as a sleep aid.
Example:THE ENGLISH PATIENT
Obscenely overlong film garnished with 9 Academy awards in 1997. As with many Not Very Exciting films, ENGLISH PATIENT was universally loved by critics, but put audiences to sleep in droves.

THE EXORCIST
Often-imitated horror film that helped the demonic possession genre on its way to mainstream acceptability and led to Linda Blair's prolific acting career in films like SAVAGE STREETS, RED HEAT, and CHAINED HEAT. Also paved the way for such pea-soup vomiting Italian delights as BEYOND THE DOOR parts 1,2 and 3, and THE ANTICHRIST.

Excrement
1. Term used by select, upscale movie critics to describe the worst of the worst films.
2. Delicacy enjoyed by Divine in the climax of John Waters's PINK FLAMINGOS.

Exit
Action one takes when one realizes that he has mistakenly gone to see a stupid film in the theater. Preferably, you want to accomplish this action as quickly as possible so as to minimize exposure to said stupid film.
Example: EXIT WOUNDS
Typical modern action film: Hip hop soundtrack. Rap star in leading role. Washed out "action hero." Direction that is too flashy for its own good. Mass exodus from the theater.

Experimental Films
Films that are usually produced outside the studios and feature more emphasis on visual composition than story lines. Sometimes feature non-linear editing and bizarre, off-kilter subject matter. Experimental films are often produced by beginning filmmakers independently, but usually are unique artistic achievements.
Example:ERASERHEAD
Man has vertical hairdo. Man gets girlfriend pregnant. Girlfriend's child is a worm-like, squealing mutant. Man talks to woman living in his radiator. If this isn't experimental, I just do not know what is.

Exploitation Films
Films that frequently utilize sensational story elements to achieve notoriety. Early exploitation featured sex and nudity not seen in mainstream films, but more recently, exploitation films have moved towards extreme violence in many cases.
Example: EMMANUELLE
First film of this never-ending series would probably be better categorized as an EROTIC film, but later entries would become more exploitative, hitting their peak with EMMANUELLE ON TABOO ISLAND and EMMANUELLE'S REVENGE, directed by exploitation director Joe D'Amato.

Expressionism
Artistic movement that found its way into feature film in German cinema Robert Weine's film THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI made in 1919. Other notable expressionist directors of the period included F.W. Murnau (NOSFERATU), Fritz Lang (METROPOLIS). Expressionist films are best known for their dark story elements, detailed sets, and sinister characters. Expressionism in turn formed the basis for the horror genre.

Extra
Cast members who are not featured in a starring role. Usually, the only place in which you will see billing for extras is in the End Credits and then you must go back through the film to see where the extra was featured.

Extreme Close-up
Type of shot that is tight into the face of an actor so that only a part of the face, i.e. the eyes, can be seen. Also used to show just a part of something, i.e. the ticking second hand of a clock.

Extreme Long Shot
Panoramic shot usually reserved for exterior establishing shot. The extreme long shot usually shows the viewer the location in which the scene takes place, and often is sometimes used to minimize the action of a scene by shooting it from a far distance so that the actors are lost in the vastness of the shot.

Eye Level Shot
Shot taken from an eye level range. Usually used to convey reality, authenticity in the action.

EYES WIDE SHUT
Stanley Kubrick's final film. Highly controversial upon release due to rumors of extensive sex between stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Once everyone saw the film, however, interest quickly dissipated.

So there you have it: The letter E.
