Pros: Compact, yet spunky, this little unit delivers the goods
Cons: The controls require too much pressure.
The Bottom Line: I'd buy one of these again, especially if I could find it for $100.

| plilikoi's Full Review: Panasonic Mid-Size Microwave Ovens |
My wife bought this little microwave oven Panasonic NN-S561BF, 1.2 ft ^3, 1300W + inverter technology) at Miramar MCAS PX in San Diego for only $100. She was attracted mainly by the price, looking to replace the microwave oven half of a GE oven/microwave, which had failed three times. One of our friends told us that the microwave in her GE/ microwave oven had also broken down twice. We had called a GE technician on the two previous occasions to bring ours back to life, but it wasn't good and it wasn't worth bringing back to life. This despite the cramped kitchen and the loss of useful space. GE microwave ovens are garbage.
The other microwave that I have had a lot of use out of is an older Sharp Carousel that's still going after almost 20 years, although not all the pressure sensitive pads work so you have to work around not having the 1, 4 and 7 buttons.
I find it hard to get excited about microwave ovens. They all look very utilitarian; cuboid with a door in the front. If Steve Jobs was making microwaves instead of iMacs we'd likely have a much more flamboyant range of colours. Indigo, for example! Alas, it's pretty much a choice of black, white or silver/gray. This microwave has a handle on the door that you have to tug open. The Sharp has a large panel that you push to release the door catch. I actually miss this. I also find that the pressure-sensitive buttons on the Panasonic require far too much pressure. Everything else is good though. It's fairly compact and much more powerful than the Sharp. The Panasonic heats in 3 minutes what the Sharp heated in 4 and the Sharp is a much larger microwave. Both microwaves have a carousel, which I have yet to be convinced really works, but it doesn't do any harm. The Panasonic can monitor steam emanating from the food and switch itself off when it's ready. This actually works too. Very cool!
