The Quintessential Quagmire - Epinions Dictionary W/O
Apr 12 '03 (Updated Apr 15 '03)
The Bottom Line Q ran off to find U and they lived happily ever after.
This is my second (and final I promise) entry in Simply_Crispys epinions dictionary of film write off. For anyone unfamiliar with this concept, it is where I get a letter of the alphabet and babble on for a long as possible with all things relating to said letter and film. My first entry (for the letter C) was quite possibly the longest thing ever. My letter this time around is Q - making it entirely possible that this entry is of readable length. This list is likely to be quirky, questionable, and lacking in both quantity and/or quality (gimme a break, its Q). Hope you enjoy!
Q - The single most entertaining and funny villain (played by the criminally underappreciated Jon DeLancie) from the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series. Shamefully, has never been featured in one of the movies. Perhaps his presence would have saved Nemesis from itself.
Q - Perennial, delightfully befuddled James Bond gadget guy, played by Desmond Llewellyn, in 17 Bond films between 1963 and 1999. Although there were several Bonds, there was only one Q (Credit for this entry, which I copied in its entirety, goes to the one and only sundogg99)
Quaid, Dennis - Actor. Cute smile. Long resume. Used to be married to Meg Ryan. Never really made it to A list leading man stature which, in the long run, is probably better for his career.
Quaid, Randy - Goofy looking brother of Dennis. May have more talent, but is less likely to get to use it due to aforementioned goofiness. Terrifically funny in the National Lampoon Vacation movies. Nobody, but nobody, wears white loafers like Randy Quaid.
Quality - An archaic term used in the early days of film to denote the actual cinematic worth of a movie. No longer used in favor of terms marketability, sequel and Steven Seagal. Found on occasion nowadays, but only after weeding through heaping mounds of cinematic rubbish.
Quarter - High end pay scale per month for most reviewers of movies, worldwide. Unless youre Ebert. Then you get a dollar.
Quayle, Dan - Former Vice President of the United States. Outspoken critic of Hollywoods poor values, blaming them for many of the ills of society. Actually went so far as to compare a television character to the life choices made by women. Outspokenly criticized by much of the nation, much of the time. To put this in perspective one must consider the man in question, who once actually spoke the following words: It isnt pollution thats harming our environment, its the impurities in the air and water that are doing it.
Queasy - A feeling familiar to any movie goer forced to sit in the first ten rows at either of the Lord of the Rings movies being shown on an ultra huge screen. One such movie goer had this feeling for nearly twelve hours following said experience.
Queen of England, The - Monarch whose dwindling role in British politics includes the knighting of various actors. Then said actors get to be introduced at various pompous functions as Sir actorboy or Dame actorgirl.
Queen of Hearts - Nastiest of the nasty characters met by Alice during her adventure in wonderland. The Lewis Carroll novel has been adapted for the screen countless times and in countless forms, never truly capturing the feel of the written story, which might best be termed hallucinatory.
Queen Latifah - Actress/Singer. Most recent roles include Bringing Down the House with Steve Martin, and Chicago - Academy Award winner for Best Film, 2002.
Queensland Tick Typhus - A rickettsial disease of Australia*, home country of famous actors Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. *thanks to the always handy Merck Manual
Quidditch - Sort of broomstick cricket/polo/soccer game played in the Harry Potter films that makes for some of the best action in these films. Flying is just plain cool, no two ways about it
Quiet - What movie patrons insist on during a film, even if all you want is to get out to go to the bathroom. Geez. Never actually found within the film itself, which is always played at decibel levels approaching those of a jet engine sitting in the next seat.
Quills - A 2000 production starring Geoffrey Rush that takes a look at the oh-so-delightfully-revolting Marquis de Sade.
Quilt, How to Make an American - 1995 film starring Winona Ryder, Maya Angelou, Anne Bancroft and a bunch of other women. Based on the book by Whitney Otto. All the women try and convince Winona that commitment/marriage is a good thing. The titular quilt has allegedly been rumored to have been stolen during filming.
Quimby, Fred - 1886 1965. Creator of the Tom and Jerry cartoons. Won eight Academy Awards for animated films and was head of MGM short feature department from 1926-1956. Most viewers have yet to figure out which is Tom and which is Jerry.
Quinine - The original antimalarial drug. Probably came in very handy during the filming of the movie The Mosquito Coast, a film in which Harrison Ford plays weird obsessed father to River Phoenix.
Quinlan, Kathleen - Actress. Has appeared in dozens of films. Particularly good in the overlooked Lawndogs.
Quinn, Aidan - Beautiful blue eyes, never plays up to his level of talent. Best movie nobody saw, This is My Father.
Quinn, Anthony - Actor. Won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for roles in Viva Zapata (1952) and Lust for Life (1956). Perhaps best known for his starring role in Zorba the Greek. Continued to produce children creepily late in life. See also: Randall, Tony
Quiz Show - Directed by Robert Redford. The story of a TV game show scandal in the 1950s. Starring the bizarre trio of Ralf Fiennes, John Turturro and Rob Morrow.
Quintessential - The best, especially if you are a cinephile.
Quit While Youre Ahead - What agents need to say to actors who are considering a spot on Hollywood Squares.
I believe I shall quit while I am (arguably) ahead. Thanks for reading!
