Wow, that was a very useful read for a new member. Thanks for putting that together. The link to item #4 ("A Little Heads up for all Newbies....From a NEWBIE") appears to be dead though.

By the way, how do I go about getting an Epibuddy? I imagine a little bit of guidance couldn't hurt...

Great essay. Haven't read all the essays you recommend, but definitely got the general ideas, and will try to read some of the other essays soon. Good job.

Can't believe I didn't find this review sooner! I parked on it and discovered 5 more wonderful writers on Epinions I hadn't came across before. Wish I have the MH button for this essay. Thanks a bunch!

Happy Holidays, too!

Thanks for linking me over to this review of yours. It was incredibly helpful in so many ways. There are tons of great advice pieces out there, I'm sure. But as a pseudo-newbie, it's hard to sort through them all. Thanks again for some great words of wisdom and some good laughs along the way. I'm defnitely glad we crossed paths and I look forward to getting to know you better.

Pay it forward! (Reply to this comment)
by Mattachine
While I have not seen the movie Pay It Forward because I think that it looks like the kind of thing that would make me vomit repeatedly, I do think the concept of "pay it forward" is brilliant and should be a meme perpetrated throughout our culture so as to make the world a kinder, better place. This is a helpful collection of links...were I not already an Epinions millionaire, I would refer to it for tidbits on this community and how it functions. :)

The information that you posted has been really helpful. I have to admit that I was really lost(which is apparent from some of my previous reviews) but after reading the information you posted I feel I have a much better grasp of what this site is all about. Thank You.

The twenty-first thing everyone should know is that there is always a self-serving newbie waiting just around the corner to shamelessly plug a review completely off-topic.

So, uh, yeah, I just thought you might want your readers to be aware of that. Otherwise, this is an excellent resource. Thanks for the compilation.

Heya Dan...

To me, the most important info in a review here would be the rating, and some brief commentary on what rubbed you the right and wrong way. Done. Out in three paragraphs or less.

There are many sites for that type of review... Amazon.com comes to mind. Epinions is for more detailed reviews. Different sites for different things. :)

WHY? (Reply to this comment)
by dandeansff
I'm actually trying to gain some understanding here.

Why would anyone want to write such a long or detailed review? PARTICULARLY about something they gave a low star-rating.

Anything with a over-all rating of 3 or less stars- I don't read the reviews! I'm off looking for something else with a 5-star average. Yet I find low reviews extremely necessary, in order to dissuade unwary consumers from buying unworthy products. But why waste so much time on detail for a book you didn't like? Who would read a long detailed review of a book with a two-star average?

To me, the most important info in a review here would be the rating, and some brief commentary on what rubbed you the right and wrong way. Done. Out in three paragraphs or less.

When I read a review, I want to know if people liked it or didn't like it- Just their opinions, with just a little bit of 'why'.

I don't get the 'just in' feature. I can see reading reviews that cover genres you may be interested in. But most of you seem more concerned with reviewer's rating than the product's rating.

I know that took a lot of thought, time and effort for you to organize and write. As a moderator of a large poetry critique forum, I can relate to wanting to help the new (and even not so new) members find their way around.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this most helpful advice complete with links.

My word is only as good as others take it, so we shall see if you think this piece is worthy of publishing into your "twenty things".

Here is the link, it's the "How to Gain A Coveted MH".

I also have another one, which is the Three Effs of review writing. Check it out if you want:

What the hell is this crap of referring to me as "user rich2003dm."

User! Maybe ten years ago, sure. I admit it. But I haven't been a user in a long time. I've been in rehab and I'm finally making it work and keeping straight.

Now I see this crap online. If my parole officer sees it, I'm back in the joint again. I ain't going back there, man. I ain't gonna be anybody's woman again. Still can't sit comfortably even to this day.

I reread madtheory's wonderful PB and J editorial and was introduced to the epinions dictionary. Learned a lot, and had fun while I was at it.

Ah- shame on you, for not updating your "open" WOT on the profile page since August. :)

I've written a few advice essays, most of which aren't worth the virtual paper they are written on.

BUT - I have written about how to copy and paste your opinion from Word (http://www.epinions.com/content_2906955908).

I also have talked about virtual personalities. (http://www.epinions.com/content_2695274628)

And, of course, there's the English language guide: (http://www.epinions.com/content_1367449732)

There are also a number of very helpful ops on how to use html in your profile, though of course I can't remember where they are now...

Cheers,
Kate
