BBBBBBBBBB
Wanna B in film? Well you came to the right place. While this is supposed to be a dictionary of film, it is looking a lot more like an index. Is it Boring? Starts with a B doesnt it? Or is it all Bull s*it? Or is it beautiful, benign, besmirched or besotted? Maybe all the above. But lets Begin.
Section I, DEFINITIONS, Section II, PEOPLE, Section III, MOVIES
On a practical note, so you dont have to read everything, check out the parts of this posting. Letss start with some true definitions in making movies, that start with the letter B .
This is not as easy to find , define or nail down as you might think. If it seems sort of scattered, it is because the writer is Befuddled.
________________________________________________________________
SECTION I - DEFINITIONS
***
B-Film-A low budget movie shown as the second feature during the big studio era. Rarely included important stars -a popular genre including thrillers and horror flicks, often used as a testing ground for new talent under contract.
back lot- During the big studio era, the back lot consisted of standing exterior sets of some common, often used locales, such as a western frontier town, or a turn of the century city block, or a European village. Whatever was a common theme, they had a set for it. In todays studio, open property where scenes can be stages, or sets built.
Back Projection (rear projection) A filming technique where live action in the foreground is shot against action projected in the background. Typically used in scenes taking place in moving cars.
Back story -the history of a character in a plot, that is not told in the film, but may be implied by the character, or understood without stating it directly, by the audience. Often used by actors to create a persona, from which they will derive their performance.
background artist-(matte artist) the artist that painted scenes or backdrops that were used instead of filming on location. This device is obvious in many Hitchcock flicks.
backlighting-When lights for a shot derive from the rear of the set, throwing foreground figures into semidarkness or silhouette
banned means that the film is not allowed in to a country or a locale by a board that is created to monitor the media that is shown in that locale. "Banned in Boston" used to mean something.
Behind the scenes- all the machinations that occur off screen. Caan refer to the unseen support and production team, or something that occurs off camera in a film.
Below the line expenses-(who cares?) All the expense of the extra stuff that you have to pay for, like basic material costs, rights to titles etc. A producers nightmare, I suppose.
Benshi-film narrator or commentator in early Japanese Film-a sort of master of ceremonies that would introduce each movie before it played, and would read the narrative, or introduce the scenes. A very handy person tio have around in the silent film era.
Best Boy- Just refers to the first assistant in whatever department it is listed. Has nothing to do with gender.
Billing-The order in which the names or listed in the credits. Has some importance to the egomaniacal actors who see themselves as a lot more important than they really are. In some cases, the cast is billed in the order in which they appear on screen instead, which makes it harder to find the stars in the lineup.
Bimbo-unflattering term for asilly, simpering shallow woman, who is flirtatious and stupid. Typically a blond that went with the gangsters of the thirties films. The first choice name for Walt Disneys Dumbo, before Walt wised up.
Biographic or Biopic-a -life story filmed. How hard could that be? I know, you thought it meant you couldnt see very well, right?
Birds eye view-a shot in which camera photographs a scene from directly overhead. (Unless of course the bird is somewhere else, or flying)
Bit part- a small unimportant part -usually one scene.
Black and white- No color in the images. Again, how hard could that be? Did I really need to define this? It does free up the cinematographer from annoying color matches, and allow him or her to focus on more interesting texture, and dynamic composition.
Black Comedy- A film which makes light of serious subjects. No it is not a funny film by Spike Lee.
Blacklisting- film makers actors, writers etc who were discriminated against and prevented from working in the McCarthy era. If you were on this list, you were out.. Oh the price we all pay when the fascist right gains control of the media!
blimp- sound proof camera housing that muffles the noise of the cameras motor sop sound can be recorded on the set. (Not to be confused with Goodyears)
Blockbuster-Financially successful movie, with box office of over 100 million. In its first usage, however, it meant that the line of people waiting to see the film went clear around the block. Also the place where I have to rent my movies now.
Blocking- movements of actors within a given playing area. Refers more to the planned movements.
Blue film- old term used in American film for hard core pornographic flicks
Blue Screen- a filming process where actors strut in front of a monochomatic background, and the background is replaced by whatever post production. In older films, without digital enhancement, It often makes the actors look like cut outs against the background.
Body Double- the replacement of a perfect body for the body of an imperfect actor. When you thought you were seeing your favorite nekkid, alas, you were not.
Body Make up -Aw come on! Applied below the neck or above the wrists. Duh!
Bomb-a movie which is a financial disaster. Except in the UK, where went down a bomb means it was a success.
Boom, boom mike- an overhead telescoping pole that carries a microphone permitting synchronous recording of sound without restricting the movements of an actor.
Boom operator-You dont have to be a rocket scientist. Figure this one out yourself. Hint: see above.
Bootleg- an unofficial and illegally copied version of a movie, often of lesser quality. Big business where the flicks have been banned or have not yet been released.
Box Office- just means the money taken in by people who see a movie in a theater, as opposed to the video rental etc. It relates back to the little box where tickets are sold in front of the theater.
Overall box office can mean all the money taken in by viewing in a theater, or relate to a specific weekend.
BAFTA -British Association of Film and Television Arts-
BFC-British Film Commission- government funded organization, cerca 1991 , formed to assist film makers in making films in the UK.
BFI -British Film Institute- exists to promote greater understanding and appreciation of and access to film and moving image culture in the UK. (Sounds like BS to me, but Becky assures me that it is not-See comment section, with my apologies. )
BSC-British Society of Cinematographers. Right. Like you need to know this.
Buck-a male deer. Or, the American dollar. Or an American Indian male in old westerns. Or, more money than I will make with this posting.
bungei-eiga-Japanese films based on literary works

bushido-the way of the Samurai. The code of ethics by which the Japanese military elite were supposed to live their lives and comport themselves.
