20 Facts About Me – Corpgent’s W/O
Apr 17 '03
The Bottom Line What a great idea for a W/O! I've learned tons of fascinating things about each of you. I really enjoyed participating! Thanks George for all your efforts.
I had been reading submissions to this W/O for a few days when George emailed me asking me to participate. I took several more days to decide to join. Finally, here's my list more facts than you really need to know about Glomarrone.
1. First & foremost I am a B.I.C. Unless you grew up in my NYC neighborhood, you wouldn't know what that means. B means I grew up in the Bronx which is deeply ingrained in me beginning with the way I talk.
2. I stands for Irish. Although my mother was of German/Polish descent, it was my fathers Irish roots that I identified with mostly. March 17th is a major holiday for me & youll always find me wearing green. For years I marched in the NYC St Patrick's Day parade. When I finally visited Ireland a few years ago I felt as if I had come home. Everyone there resembled my relatives.
3. C stands for Roman Catholic. Since my parents were religious, much of my early life revolved around parish activities. I attended local parochial elementary schools & high schools & belonged to church teen organizations. Although I am angry about what has been happening in my religion, my faith remains strong.
4. Have you ever wished for a friend who would always there for you? Someone who wants to do what you want to do, thinks like you, acts like you? Well I have one - my twin sister. Growing up, even our parents couldnt tell us apart, never mind our teachers. We were always pulling pranks on everyone. Sure we fought like cats & dogs sometimes but if anyone picked on one of us, the other one defended her. Even though we now live 1,000 miles away, we often get together unknowingly wearing the same clothes. We discover that we have purchased the exact same appliances & once even built in-ground pools at our respective homes at the same time. We still finish each others sentence. As a child, our older sister prayed every night asking for a sister. Dont ask her to say any prayers for you. She got her wish in duplicate not at all what she expected, Im afraid.
5. Attending a city college really broadened my view of life. My father was afraid Id become a communist, but I knew there were a whole other world out there that I wanted to explore. There I learned how to think critically & found many subjects that interested me that I hadnt even know existed such as Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology & Political Science. I met people from diverse backgrounds - we all learned as much from each other as we did from the professors.
6. I still consider myself a teacher even though I no longer actively teach. For many years, I taught second grade in the NYC Public School System. One day I received a transfer student. Usually new students are very reserved on their first day, shy & uncertain - not this kid. As soon as he walked in, he addressed me by name, shuffled to a seat in the back & immediately began talking to another child. Later I told my twin about the childs behavior only to discover that he was her former student. He thought his teacher had followed him to his new school. We had a good laugh. I eventually left teaching to raise my children. When my children entered school, I returned to teach Special Education high school seniors in a nearby suburban school.
7. During our college years, my twin & I met our future husbands on the same night at the same party. We all dated for 5 years, married within weeks of each other & are still happily married after 35 years. My husband introduced into my life the richness of his Italian heritage its cooking, songs, language, traditions. I was motivated to attend an adult education course in Conversational Italian after a trip to meet his relatives in Italy. In hindsight, I should have taken the course before the trip. My favorite food is now Italian & sometimes I forget that I am not Italian.
8. Up until now, I thought I had a complete life happy childhood, marriage to a wonderful husband, two healthy, bright kids - a daughter & a son & comfortable home. Then I became a grandma & realize how much richer my life has become. My grandkids are the smartest, brightest, most adorable kids around. In case you think Im just bragging, let me see if I have that album I always carry with me. My 3-year-old grandson calls me grandma & it is music to my ears. I sing a special song to him that tells him how much I love him. He gets very quiet, listening intently. One day I hope hell sing it back to me.
9. As you can tell from the above, family means a lot to me. My parents were very strong role models in my life. I was very involved in my kids lives, too active in PTA & scouting organizations. Holidays & birthdays are still always celebrated with relatives. I enjoy organizing family BBQs & reunions. A few Christmases ago the entire family flew out to CO to spend the holidays with my nieces family. Sometimes the clan gets together just to go shopping, ice-skating or to a show. Over the years I have become even closer to my older sister & we are retiring together to FL to be near my twin sister.
10. More basic facts - I'm a Libra, a southpaw & my favorite color is turquoise. Oops that's three facts.
11. My idea of a perfect vacation is to go somewhere I havent been before. First I do tons of research learning as much as I can about the destination. I like to start out early every day, cram in as much sightseeing as I possible can, take as many photographs as I can so I wont forget anything I see & return home knowing that I have seen it all.
12. I guess you could call me frugal. I mainly dine in restaurants when I have a buy one get one free coupon or some other good deal. Its not that I go to fast food places, I go to nice restaurant but mostly when they have a special. I have the Entertainment book for NY & FL - so far have saved over $200 since November. I drive a 19 year old car - a Nissan 300ZX. I love it because it is so sporty looking. It still runs perfectly. Why buy a new one?
13. Anyone who knows me knows I have a passion for collecting Beanie Babies. After everyone else stopped collecting, Im still at it. I own way over 500 of them - they overflow our family room. Recently I suggested to my husband that I might stop adding to my collection once we relocate to FL. He offered me a new car if I would just stop bringing the critters home.
14. Some people who meet me for the first time think Im quiet; others may think Im rambunctious & assertive. Thats because at different times, or with different people I can be either. My husband says he never knows what to expect from me & hasnt figured me out yet. I like to keep him guessing. Heck, I keep myself guessing too. Life is never boring.
15. Recently, we've had a little readjustment in our lives. Now that our parents are diseased, my husband & I realize that we have become the older generation. There is no older family member now to go to for advice. We have become the advice givers. I hope we are up to it. I dont feel as wise as our parents always seemed to be, but I guess well grow into the role.
16. I hate watching horror, murder or very sad movies. I'm bombarded by upsetting news every day in the media. So, I mostly watch comedies or sappy chick flicks.
17. Even better than a good movie is a good book. I become so engrossed in my reading that I lose track of my surroundings. Several times I got caught in thunderstorms because I wasnt paying attention to the changing weather. I enjoy good mysteries, historical novels & am always on the lookout for a good cookbook.
18. I am a deep sleeper. Late one night there was a fire in our building. Screaming fire trucks arrived on the scene. Using bullhorns, the firemen repeatedly instructed everyone to evacuate the building. I slept through it all. Luckily, the fire in the incinerator was quickly extinguished.
19. I should act my age. Sometimes I do crazy things. Once my daughter & her friend arrived at our home to find me skating inside on roller blades. I had just gotten new roller blades & wanted to try them out before venturing outside. Her friend still laughs about it. Another time my daughters boy friend came by the house & found me printing dollar bills on my printer. I assured him I wasnt a counterfeiter but he said it was better he didnt hear my explanation. I love altering photos adding into group shots people who were there but were absent in the photo. Once we were supposed to meet a couple for dinner at a large, very busy restaurant. Somehow we missed each other. I asked the waiter to take our picture & later added the couple into the photo putting them at our table. For a long time I had them thinking that they had too much wine that night & didnt remember our arrival.
20. I am spending way too much time on the site. It was my son who convinced me to join Epinions.com back in Nov. 2000. Now hes long gone from the site & Im still here. The best part of being on this site was getting to meet Susie-35668 & her hubby Len.
