The 'L' You Say. Epinions Dictionary Of Film W/O -The Letter L
by Vormancian | Apr 14 '03
Imagine saying 'L. L. L. L.' over and over again as though you were a spam-loving Viking, and eggs, sausage, and L was all there was on the menu.

(Like I know what I am doing at 2 AM.) La-la-la is something you can say as a mantra when you are trying not to listen to a group's inane banter.i-because you know if you actually hear what they are saying you will be forced to terminate them. Try it. It works for me.

To tell you the truth, I never see his movies come on TV over here either.

The fan generation may be gone, but I don't even really know if they ever existed. Somehow it's just become the old joke.

Appreciate the comment.

Cheers!

Hmmm, have you seen it?

I don't think I've ever been asked to explain Modesty before.

Well, it's hard to describe what it is exactly, but if you could do it, it would be a brilliant example of that. It's almost brilliant just in being such a product of its times, sort of along the lines of 'Our Man Flint'.

****I suggest you, Chad_Lime, and I start an "I Heart Hudson Hawk" club, through which we can spread the gospel that this much-loathed flick is actually a pretty entertaining slice of perfection. Or would you rather be a fish?****

I didn't realize either of you liked it. I'm so used to having never run into anyone who liked it, that I just assume that I'm the absolutely only one.

****The only thing more true than ‘Germans love David Hasselhoff’ is ‘The French love Jerry Lewis’.

Do I detect a fond remembrance of Norm MacDonald in this line? Please say it so. A man who adores the Hawk and the Norm as much as I do? Sight…****

Well, I don't know if I adore Norm, but I do like him. Oh, and yes, it was certainly a remembrance of him. The strangest thing about it is that you really wouldn't believe how often I manage to work 'Germans love David Hasselhoff' into a conversation.

Her best performance? Or, what sort of best performance?

I don't know, I just thought the whole movie was goofy. I will admit, however, that I may be very jaded, because I thought the whole movie was goofy before I ever saw it.

Now, come on. You have to give him the first two Star Wars movies, and Raiders at the very least. He may be awful now, but let's not let that cloud our judgement.

;)

with you more about David Lynch, but Jessica Lange hard to look at? Oh my goodness... I think she's goy-jiss.

Oh, and who's that Lopez, Jennifer chick you mentioned? Never heard of her... :)

....also played in an episode of I LOVE LUCY. She played a crazy lady that Lucy and Ethel hitch a ride with. They think she is an ax-murderer they hear about on the radio.

your bottom line is telling me to imagine saying 'L' over and over again. Well, I'm not imagining it, but I am doing it and I feel like my tongue is going to fall off!

Thanks muchly.

Appreciate your comment.

I know a lot of people that think of 'Animal House' in a similar way. Somehow, I am not among them, though it's a great film.

I have never seen a Jerry Lewis movie appear on tv over here. While if you bring him up no one says anything mean, they don't rave about him either. I get the feeling that the Jerry Lewis generation must be sort of dying out, or something.

Modesty Blaise? (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
An excellent list, if unexpectedly useful and detailed and informative in a way that i hope will not besmirch the write-off's sterling reputation. One question: would you care to spend a couple sentences making the case that Modesty Blaise is a masterpiece of whatever it is? Your writeup of its director intrigued me, but i can't find any other case for the movie at the obvious sources.

cheers,

'L' of a list (Reply to this comment)

Marc-

Lehmann, Michael - In some sense, few directors are less notable, but Lehmann is a rare mix of brilliance and stupidity that warrants its own attention. Directing such films as ‘Heathers’ and ‘Hudson Hawk’ (which I love even if everyone else hates it),

I suggest you, Chad_Lime, and I start an "I Heart Hudson Hawk" club, through which we can spread the gospel that this much-loathed flick is actually a pretty entertaining slice of perfection. Or would you rather be a fish?

The only thing more true than ‘Germans love David Hasselhoff’ is ‘The French love Jerry Lewis’.

Do I detect a fond remembrance of Norm MacDonald in this line? Please say it so. A man who adores the Hawk and the Norm as much as I do? Sight…

Slightly exhausting (like I'm one to talk!) but highly entertaining list…

Lucas a two-trick pony? (Reply to this comment)
by Simply_Crispy
I didn't even know that he had one trick. Aside from spending shedloads on special FX, and hiring Steven Spielberg to direct films he's too untalented to deal with.

Very informative stuff. I see you went for the serious angle. Good enough for me.

Lancaster and Liotta (Reply to this comment)
by millinocket
Both in my beloved Field of Dreams. Lancaster always oozed class and Liotta is just kinda creepy.

Lambert, Christopher...........single-handedly (unless you have a better theory) spurred a spike in the number of children named ‘Connor’ of almost mythic proportions

Ha! I like this theory. It's just as plausible as any other.

Landis, John

We were just recently talking about Animal House - a movie that truly marks my teen years like no other. But I had completely forgotten about John Landis.

Lovely list, laddy,

Sue
