I haven't always used Google. I only started about a year ago. I hadn't even heard of it until one of my favorite TV shows, The Screensavers, started talking about it. Then when they did a list of the top search engines, and Google was at the top, I immediately signed on the net and surfed over to this wonderful search engine. Here is what I found:
The first thing somebody will notice when they go to the site, www.google.com, is that it there are no banners or advertisements. There are advertisements on the site, but you only see them when they are related to your search. For example, if you are searching for car audio, then at the top, above the regular links, you will probably find one or two links to places where you can buy car audio. Other than that, you will find no advertisements, banners, or other sponsored links.
Google searches through millions of websites. In fact, it searches through 1,346,966,000 sites, which is one billion, three hundred and fourty-six million, nine hundred and sixty-six thousand sites. And they are adding more all the time.
With all of those sites, you might ask what keeps all of the best sites at the front where you are more likely to see them. Well, Google checks how many links each site has going to it. For example, if site A and B have a link to site C, but only site A has a link to site B, then as long as both B and C are about what you are searching for, then site C is going to have a higher rank, and the higher the rank, the more likely you are going to see it before the others. They do look at more than just how many links a site has going to it however. They also look at the page that has the link. Looking at the earlier example, lets change it and say that sites D and E have links to site F, and sites G and H have links to site I. If site D and E both have 30 links to themselves, but G and H only have 10 going to them, then site F will have a higher rank because the sites that linked to it, are also ranked high. Sorry if that is confusing, that is the only way I can think to explain it.
One of the best things about Google, is that it is fast. I just did a search on car audio, and with my 56k modem on a 48.8K internet connection, it found 1,160,000 links in 0.17 seconds. That's fast! As soon as I clicked search, I had a list of results waiting for me to try out.
Google has this great feature that allows you to put a toolbar on your internet browser so you can quickly use google's search without having to go to google's main page. This feature is called the Google Toolbar. I'm not sure which browsers it supports, but if you have one it supports, I highly recommend downloading it. It adds a toolbar to your internet browser, which has everything on it that you would find at the Google site. It has a search box, a feature that allows you to search the site you are on, a page rank which tells you the rank of the page you are at, it supplies info on the page you are at, gives you the ability to go back to previous pages you have been to, and lets you highlight terms on a site and search just those terms. All of the features are simply amazing. The best part of all, its free.
Everything about google is free. Everything that is, except for advertising on it. However, using google and the google toolbar are absolutely free. You will never have to pay to use these.
Google is in my opinion the best search engine ever. Not only is it fast, full of sites, and bannerless, it is free. And with the google toolbar, who wouldn't love google. Go there, check it out, and you will see as I have that Google truly is the greatest there is.
