Cons: No voice dialling. No infrared. Battery life could be better.
The Bottom Line: Samsung make the best slider phones. This sturdy phone can be used anywhere in the world and has great camera, mp3 player and file manager. Why bother with D900...yet!

I have been using the SGH-D600 for around five months now. I had never had a slider phone before as I imagined they might break easily.Seeing is believing. This is a very sturdy slider phone. The mechanism feels safe and strong.
The first thing that hits you is the screen. Wow! This is a 2 inch screen with resolution of 240X320. It has a crisp clear vibrant quality that impresses.
The D600 comes with an very decent 2 megapixel camera with flash. The quality of a photo is near excellent and does not lose its clarity when used as a wallpaper. Note there is a very slight delay when shooting an image. There are templates for your photos and a good picture editor. The only downside to the camera is that the lens is situated on the back of the lower fixed part of the phone so is not protected. Whether open or closed it will always remain prone to collect dust. A glove might be a good investment though that is not ideal for everyone.
Underneath the screen are the buttons to access everything you will need. The buttons click easily and are quite soft. Although this portion of the phone looks very small under the large screen the buttons are large enough. The main menu can be accessed here and unless you need to tap in a telephone number, surf type or write an sms you wouldnt have to slide open the phone. All pretty handy. Once you have opened the slider and shut it again the phone will lock. You have an option to use the front buttons to unlock but its quicker to open the slider again. The keypad on the lower part when open is finger friendly. Nice feel.
The phone has an excellent bluetooth facility and has posed no problems. There is no infrared. Cant work out why in such an up to date phone but I always preferred bluetooth anyway. There is 76MB of storage to use and it takes micro SD cards so you will not go short on memory. The SD card is well covered in a side slot and is simple to take in and out. The phone will automatically make files and folders on the card and everything can be accessed easily from the file manager in the menu. It really is simplicity itself.
I have a few music videos on my card and I must say that when played in the player I am mightily impressed with the quality. The picture is so clear. The sound is fair too. If you want full screen video just press 1. Excellent. I have a 512mb SD card and its amazing how much you can cram on these tiny cards. The video files are in 3GP and MPEG 4 format. MPEG 4 seems better I think.
If you have a memory card reader use that instead of the slow USB 1.1 You will have to enable your card as a mass storage device if you want to see it seperately on your pc. This can be done on the settings on the actual phone. The Sony Pc Studio software installed quickly and I have never had any problems at all with syncing. Just wish it was a tad faster. Outlook is available for synchronization. I dont bother with it personally but I know its important to a lot of people. Overall file control and synchronization are great. Read your documents from word ,excel to pdf though the clarity of these could be better. A bit straining on the eyes.
The phone as a phone? Absolutely no negatives. Sound is clear.I am on Orange and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever. Comfortable to hold whilst taking a call and easy quick front button start and end call feature. It is a quad band phone. There is no voice activated dialling on the phone which wont impress some people. Assign ringtones to caller feature is a plus. Sending sms and mms is a breeze.
The D600 comes with java games which are superb in picture and sound. The MP3 player is very good but personally I would have liked a little bit more volume. The volume doesnt lessen when slider is closed as with some older samsung models. The MP3 player has various skins. There is an alarm, calculator, convertor, timer and stopwatch. All adds to the fun! The voice recorder is very acceptable in quality with a recording time of up to one hour.
Battery life is not that good. Listen to a couple of MP3's and make two ten minute phone calls and you have reduced the battery to around 50%.
I know the D900 is now out. I have taken a look and been tempted. It has a 3 megapixel camera but that would appear to be the only thing going for it over this earlier model. I am quite happy to stick with the D600 for a while yet.
It is giving me all I need in a phone with a lot of great extras and a solid performance.
