Pros:Great Sound, Huge music storage capacity , Cutting-edge features, Upgradeable
Cons:Very Very Expensive, Short boot-up delay time
The Bottom Line: If money does not matter, this is for you!

The Empeg is now owned by Rio. This player which was owned by Empeg was called the Mark II and is now known as Rio Car. It is one of the most, if not the most, high tech, and cutting-edge in-dash car stereos available today.

Pricing
If you don't have the money, you need not read this opinion. This system is very expensive and should only be bought if you have the money. The cheapest one I think you can get it for $999 during this summer... However, usually I think the prices range from $1100-$1500 depend on how much storage space you want. I think prices may drop, eventually.

What is it?
This is different from regular CD car stereos and tape decks. It plays MP3s. If you don't know what an MP3 is, then this car stereo isn't for you. You have to like technology and music to enjoy this car stereo.

The way it works you download or copy MP3s on to your computer from the web or from CDs. And hopefully have a program that will fill in the information (ID3 tags) for you. Then you run the software the Rio Car (Empeg Mark II) comes with and it will allow you to organize your music anyway you like. Then you simply plug a USB, Ethernet, or Serial cable from your computer into the Rio Car (Empeg Mark II) and transfer all the music files on to it. The Rio Car is very easy to remove from your car, because the whole thing just slides out. You can also use it in your house to play music from since it has an output to household RCA.

Extras
Since it actually a computer running it takes a few seconds to boot up, however the expansion possibilities for it are endless. If you look online you can find a whole community of people who program add-ons for this thing which is really cool. You can do such things as change the boot up logo. The Rio Car also comes with over 20 visuals that change to the music. If you have WinAmp or a program like it you will know what I am talking about. To see these visuals in your car is really amazing. It is sort of distracting sometimes driving late at night ;) - I sometimes have to turn them off.

The Remote and Search Capabilities
My friends really enjoy driving in my car now, as they can sit back, relax and flip through music with the remote. The remote allows you to change visualizations easily, access the menus, even search for any song! You can search for songs by: year, title, artist, or even a special number you can assign your favorite songs. Also, with the songs you search for you can make temporary play lists right then in the car!

Support
Empeg has a great community and a lot of support. There are many questions you may ask, but I guarantee someone can answer them. The owners of these have formed an online community around the product... I have never seen that for a car stereo before. However, with Rio taking it over it seems things are a little messy, but I haven't had any trouble.

Is it for me?
This is truly a car stereo of the future, and many people still may not understand its full capabilities. But if your up on technology and have the money I definitely suggest getting it.
