after birth infanticide (Reply to this comment)
by aohcapablanca
Dear Patsy,
You write: "I still faithfully read Prudence, who, by the way, is Ann Landers daughter. (You can find her weekly column on Slate.com.) "
I went looking for Prudence, found a recent column, made no sense of it. So found one there by another columnist today on the liberal case for killing unwanted babies after they are born.
Reminded me of some lines of Rudyard Kipling:(McDonough's Song at the end of "As Easy as A.B.C."):
"Whether the State can loose and bind
In Heaven as well as on Earth:
If it be wiser to kill mankind
Before or after the birth ---"
Do you still read SLATE?
Live long and prosper!

still an advice column junkie? (Reply to this comment)
by aohcapablanca
Eight years ago you wrote:
"I admit it. I am an advice column junkie."
Time has passed. There are new advice columnists.
Is Patsy still attuned to them? Any tips as to which ones are better? More profound? More empathetic?
Do any focus on Burmese pythons or other fauna of your part of Florida?
Live long and prosper!

I still get a chuckle when I remember how I was outwitted by this clever man. However, I never admitted defeat and we never, ever, talked about this strange battle of wills. I might mention that Ann Lander's daughter now writes her column, "Dear Margo" on wowowow.com every Thursday and Friday. Dear Prudence is written by someone else.

You wrote: "How true."
I know what you mean. But what is truth? Patsy's is a great yarn whether or not she even had a husband in real life. Does it matter, for instance, if O'Henry's "Gift of the Magi" described the author's real-time-and-space neighbors?

This was the only time I tried Ann Lander's advice. I usually solved my problems in my own unique fashion.

Tell us more! (Reply to this comment)

Patsy, you wrote that "one size fits" all doesn't necessarily apply to advice.
Can you give some more examples of advice you tried from Ann Landers & Co. that didn't pan out?

Dear Patsy,
If you never talked about the piles,
what did you talk about?
Oh, to have been a fly on your wall!

Is neatness the supreme value? (Reply to this comment)
by aohcapablanca
Dear PATSYV,
Some people are more attentive to neatness than others.
Those who are not neatniks had better have some strong compensatory qualities, e.g.
-- brilliance in tricky chess openings,
-- winning dimples,
-- willingness to clean the fish they catch and bring you to cook.
Cheers!

Wow! At least I am not alone..... (Reply to this comment)

... I let the piles produce for about 1 week and then I can't stand it any more. I pick it up & start again. (The favorite pile is the computer chair back, with shoes included to trip on, on the floor). It doesn't matter what I may say, and, soooo politely to! at that. But, in recourse, he does do 1 load of laundry, (1), about each week, it is usually his pile that I gather and present at the foot of the washer floor! What a routine!!
Take care,

reminds me . . . (Reply to this comment)
by CyndiA
In college, we had to do a "change" project. Pick something that someone did. Change our behavior. The idea was that they would change too.
My roommate would NOT wash dishes. I told her we would take turns. I did not cave in. I did not cave in. She washed, but the house smelled bad. Turns out that she put the really nasty ones under the sink in a trash bag. When I finally found the frying pan and caked pyrex, it took eons to clean them. I washed dishes until I moved out.
I really can't relate to the comment that someone has other good points so the dirty socks and underwear don't count. It's not the clothing but the message. Anyone who would expect someone else to do that every day and would ignore the stack building . . . they are disrespectful and nasty to boot. I don't care how many roses someone carries in. If they can't put the dirty undies in the hamper or down the stairs, then they don't deserve to be a part of this family.

like something I would do BUT I would NOT buy any others. If he wanted to have some to wear, he'd have to put them in the hamper. Heck in my house, they'd also have to wash them :-)

Re: Hello (Reply to this comment)

It never particularly bothered me that I picked up after my ex-husband (notice, I said "ex-husband"). I had a lot of fun telling this story over the years. And, the funny thing is, we never, ever, discussed what happened. It was kind of an "Outer Limits" experience.
