About Me: A geek with a heart! An artist without a brush!

3D or not 3D, that is indeed the question!

Pros:Quite a thorough guide for the Softimage newbie.
Cons:It covers the same ground as the supplied manuals.
The Bottom Line: OK for the newbie I suppose. Veteran users should look elsewhere.

I bought this book a couple of years back when I was considering the purchase of Softimage 3D 3.7. It cost me a rather meaty 71UKP, which is a lot of money in anyone’s language.

The book itself is bound buy a (rather cheap looking) hardback cover, which may go some ways to explaining the rather high price tag. But hey, it's what’s inside that counts, right?

Unfortunately what's inside isn't up to much. Sure it covers all the basics but so do the manuals that come free with your copy of Softimage, what's the point in paying for a book that’s just covering old ground. I also get the impression that the person who wrote the book (Mr Anthony Rossano) while very knowledgeable of the technicalities behind using the Softimage package has no real artistic ability. This is illustrated by the lack images authored by him in any of the books numerous gallery sections. In fact, this seems true of almost all the authors in the 'Inside' series from New Riders publishing.

All in all, there isn't really much I can say about this book. There are some nice Images in the Gallery section and it's generally well written but that's about it I’m afraid.

The bottom-line. If you have the Softimage manuals you do not need this book.
