Generally, I am not a lucky person. My take on that is my Grandfather sucked all the luck out of the family when he bought a ticket for his secretary to the Irish Sweepstakes back about 50+ years ago and then she changed her mind so he kept it. Needless to say, that was a winner. Since then, no one in my family wins things. I buy raffle tickets, nada. I enter contests, nothing. If it’s between me and another person, you can be sure that other person will win.
Somehow, lightning struck and I won one of the first review prizes from Epinions. You could have knocked me over with a feather, that’s for sure. My prize was a $100 gift card to Best Buy. Seeing how the nearest one around here is an hour away in Rochester, I decided to spend it using the online store.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Best Buy is a sort of department store featuring Electronics, Cameras, Computers, Appliances, Phones, Office Products, Movies, Music, Games, and Toys. I had a few ideas of what I wanted and browsed around the site. The main page is laid out very well and I found it quite easy to locate a variety of different things in the categories I was looking at.
Listings give a lot of information. I liked knowing right away that an item was in stock and would ship soon. This was a factor since one of the items I ended up getting was a new printer for my kids’ computer. I didn’t want to have to wait a long time for something like that to come. The other item I chose was a steam cleaner for our rugs. We had been thinking about that for a long time and we finally decided to take the plunge.
I liked the ability to compare the various models. On the steam cleaner, it worked great and I could decide if I really wanted to pay more for some of the features or make do with a cheaper model. When I was looking at the printers, one of the things I try to factor in is cost of replacement cartridges. This information was not readily available, even via a link, and I had to go searching on other websites for the information. However, the listings are very comprehensive on the features and functions of the products I was looking at.
The prices were very reasonable. Without the gift card, the steam cleaner was showing a price of $89.99, but was discounted an additional $5.00 when I added it to my cart. This was the cheapest I found that model when browsing anywhere. The printer was $71.99 which was also a good price.
Once I was satisfied with what I had chosen, I added the items to my cart and proceeded to checkout. I was prompted to create an account, which I did although you can checkout without doing so. Best Buy accepts all major credit cards for payment of online items. For some products, you can order them online and pick them right up at the store. These items can also be paid for using cash or personal check. Gift cards are accepted for both online and in-store purchases.
Not that it mattered, but even when browsing the products I could see which were available for store pickup or not. This is good for people who want to save the shipping fees and pick up directly at the store. I didn’t feel the shipping charge of $12.78 for the two items was unreasonable, especially considering their bulk.
I checked out and the gift card was applied to my order with no problem. An email followed with tracking numbers. My items were shipped via UPS and I tracked it through the Best Buy website first to get to the UPS website with the tracking codes.
My items arrived one day later than predicted due to the Valentine’s Day snowstorm, but otherwise I was pleased. They were in good condition and just as described.
I would use Best Buy again if the need arose without hesitation. Their selection is great, the prices are good, shipping charges are reasonable, and delivery time is accurate. All in all, winning the gift card has been a completely positive experience!
