| phungus's Full Review: Reno 911: Miami |
Reno 911: Miami is the big screen version of the hit show on Comedy Central. It has been around for a few years now, and is basically a parody of COPS, but with a central cast. Much like The Office, it is another show that spoofs reality television and so-called documentaries, and is shot in the same style as MTVs Real World where one-on-one interviews are edited in between the story footage.
I always liked the TV show, but like many comedies the jokes dont always work. Such is the case with this movie. As a whole, it is pretty funny, but it has quite a few gags that go on too long while nobody was laughing. I read one review headline that likened this movie to Borat, but such a comparison would be a stretch. Basically, this movie is just like an extended episode of the TV show, but with a bigger budget and no censors. That means it has nekkid people and cussin, yall.
The plot of this movie, if you could call it that, is about how the small Reno Sheriffs Department is invited to Miami Beach for a law enforcement convention. Shortly after they arrive, a terrorist attack puts the entire convention on quarantine, which in effect puts out every law enforcement official in the city of Miami. Since the Reno squad was having problems gaining entrance to the convention, they didnt get quarantined, and pretty soon find themselves in the job of policing all of Miami.
The rest of the movie shows them responding to a series of random 911 calls just like what you see in the TV show. In between these calls, there is a subplot about a terrorist trying to take over the city. I thought the whole terrorist thing was pretty lame because it was just Paul Rudd doing a Scarface parody. Those parts of the movie just werent very funny and the audience in my theater didnt react to them. I was at least glad that the writers kept the ridiculous tone of the show and didnt even try to make a serious movie. The Police Academy movies would win Oscars compared to this one.
Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, who star in the movie and TV show, also wrote the screenplay with Garant directing. Did you also know that they wrote the screenplay for Night at the Museum, which has earned over $200 million dollars in the United States alone? Just dont go into this movie expecting the same kind of family-friendly humor.
Reno 911: Miami was made by the same people who do the show on Comedy Central. The bottom line here is that if you like the show, then youll like the movie. The opening weekend box office receipts are looking to be respectable enough to make this movie turn a profit just in its first weekend alone, so thats a sure sign there will be more of these movies. Id go see them.
