I am a huge Mozart fan... (Reply to this comment)

...and I agree - in that sense, it's worth watching, just to see what a brilliant 12yo mind he had - plus the cat fight at the end sounds like it makes the whole thing worth watching! LOL!
Great review, as always, Smorg! :)

O neat! I hadn't heard any version of 'The Impressario' before I saw the DVD, but have since ordered the original German one with Gruberova as Mme Herz. :o)
Don't like the price much considering how short the thing is, but to have Gruberova singing that wonderful trio at the end is worth it for me.
Thanks for stopping by, Stephen! Hope the writing is goin' well. I was gonna go for the 10 for $10 deal, but am pretty out of steam after 2 reviews... O, well. The month is still young. ;o)
Cheers,
Smorg

Too much boldface! (Reply to this comment)

I used to have a tape that I like of Dorry Previn's Englishing of "The Impressario." I don't think I've ever heard (let alone seen) it in the original German.

I only wish you'd write it up! I already posted my amateur take on it, which interests no one else, it seems!
Not all that amateur a take, I say. That's a heck of a well written piece, T! O, I think the rating's been slow this past month from the winter blue. ;o)
I'd love to write it up, mate, but I'm afraid I missed the beginning due to some trolley traffic on my way there (the cool thing about seeing this in a movie theater, really... had it been a real performance I'd have missed the Letter Scene altogether since they wouldn't have let me it until the intermission!).
You REALLY must spread the word here on Eps about the fantastic Met live simulcasts, since I'm a poor promoter of the program.
Nonsense! I love your review of it. Very stylish and engaging (the enthusiasm is oozing off the screen). I'm really looking forward to reading more opera reviews from you. :o)
I'd love to write an essay on the HD broadcasts, tho I'm a bit backed up at the moment (wanting to write up the San Diego Opera, too... they can use more publicity... It is a disgrace that the 5th largest opera house in the USA can only afford to put on 5 opera a year!).
Oh, a marionette opera? Sounds dee-lightful! I think I'll look for this DVD, and hope against hope I can rent it somewhere.
I hope so, T. It's an interesting staging... though the Bastien part might be boring. The music of the Schauspieldirektor is to die for, tho. And the difference between a 12 yrs old Mozart and an older one fresh from having written Don Giovanni is startling. Could use a better Mme Herz, but then with 20 other Mozart operas being staged at the same time it is already a miracle that they still have this good a group of singers for this show!
Thanks again for stopping by, cherie! Hope your week has started well!
Cheers,
Smorg :o)

...I see from your comment to my old Argerich piece that you DID see 'Eugene Onegin' last Saturday!

You REALLY must spread the word here on Eps about the fantastic Met live simulcasts, since I'm a poor promoter of the program. You, on the other hand, will get lots interested in the show, not to mention OPERA (a word that puts off most people I know!).

O, the dude sorta dropped off the face of the earth, mate. :o) I've been only able to find 1 DVD of his so far (Tarare from the Schwetzingen Festival... reviewed some months ago). His works just aren't staged much (not because he killed Mozart either... a myth!).
But I heard that Italian diva Cecilia Bartoli has been digging his score up in a 'Salieri Project' for a recital disc. Looking forward to checking that out. ;o)
Thanks a bunch for stopping by and the kind shout out, mate! Hope your weekend's been a rocking good one!
Cheers,
Smorgy :o)
