| JDinPA's Full Review: Oh, the Places You'll Go! |
Dr. Seuss books were around when I was a child, and I, like so many other people in the world, have grown up to the silly rhymes and storyboards that Dr. Seuss brought to life before our very eyes. The impossible came to life and we jumped right in on all the fun going on.
Dr. Seuss had his own unique interpretation of the world and gave us all decades and decades of reading adventures! His stories captured your attention and led you off with the outrageous characters that rambled and wiggled and galloped through his stories. The Grinch and the Cat In The Hat may very well be his most recognizable stories, but there are over 40 other stories waiting on you in case you didn't know about all those others! So get reading!!!!
My husband and I received "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" as a "parent present" when we had our first child. Since the hormones were running rampant in those days (and for some reason I never actually recovered from hormone interference~ lol) I cried my way through the book, thinking of my new-born being all grown up and moving on out to meet the world. There was the story of all the things he would face right there on each and every page and I was not ready to let him go ~ not yet, not for a long while anyway!
This book by Dr. Seuss, "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" is not your typical early reading, early fun children's book. This book, unlike all the others by Dr. Seuss, is written specifically for those setting off into life, whether it be by leaving home or by taking on new challenges. It is appropriate for those changing careers, graduating college and becoming part of the "real" world. "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" is perfect for new parents setting off on the task of being responsible for a new little life, as well as now having a new life themselves.
While young children may not be able to grasp the meanings behind all the words, they will enjoy the drawings and the rhyming sentences as the person reading the story to them may be all teary-eyed and choked up. So, really, if you look at who this book is really for ~ it is for everyone of every age to enjoy! This book may bring special meaning and have emotional reactions in some that it touches at a deeper level. You cannot go wrong in buying this book for yourself, your family, or for another special person in your life.
In "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" you will find Dr. Seuss story-telling his way through a "graduation" speech of sorts ~ A speech that wishes you well and encourages you to find the success that lies in each one of us. A speech that sends you on your way into the world out there letting you see the good, the bad, the indifferent. A speech that hopes you make your way, hopes you make good choices, and hopes you continue to push ahead even if the going gets rough or scary.
The drawings are bright and vivid and outrageous. This is Dr. Seuss at his most serious sillyness. There are 44 pages to the actual story of "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" and you are treated to finding each picture and corresponding rhyme covers 2 full pages. The 1st page and the last page are 1-page drawings, but everything in between is full scale Dr. Seuss with crazy scenes and happenings all around, giving you 42 story-boards of wild nutty action ~ not your usual Dr. Seuss book that's for sure.
"Oh, The Places You'll Go!" was copyrighted in 1990, published by Random House, New York. This book is hardcover and retails for $13.00 in the U.S. and $17.50 in Canada. The ISBN # is 0-679-80527-3 ~ Do check it out at your book-seller ~ it is a book you will want to take home with you, if not give away as a gift.
While we all can imagine Dr. Seuss as silly and funny and charming to all, I thought I would end my review by copying a portion of the more serious and introspective side of Dr. Seuss that you will find in this book ~ Enjoy:
All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you'll be quite a lot.
And, when you're alone, there's a very good chance
you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.
But on you will go
though the weather be foul.
On you wil go
though your enemies prowl.
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl.
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.
On and on you will hike.
And I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.
You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right food with your left
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
And, now I leave you to wonder about the rest of the story. I leave you to run out and buy your own copy. Just put on your shoes, your hat and your smile, and rush out the door while waving goodbye~!!! Thanks for reading ~ Judy
