The Bottom Line It won't find you -- you must find it!

Did you ever wonder what happens if you move and forget to get your utility deposit back when you were in New York?

Or

You left an employer and did not get your last paycheck in California?

Or

You have moved and forgot to close little Johnny’s bank account in Texas?

Each state goes through businesses and collects those inactive accounts, checks that were never returned, or refunds that were returned to the sender because there was no forwarding address.

Each state has an Unclaimed Property Website and it's FREE!

This site lists all 50 states:

For the lucky people that find money, they tell me it takes about 6 months to get the money from the state. Not because they’re not trustworthy, but because the state does not spend a lot of money on a big staff to get you your money. So be patient!

WARNING: Do not submit a claim for money that is not your property!

Step 1: Select the State

Step 2: On the State’s homepage find Unclaimed Property.

Step 3:
A Most states allow you type in the name
Example: John Smith
B. They may have a list that you can review for your name.
C. State’s also allow searches for business names.
D. You may have to print and send in a form to search for your name

Step 4: If you find property that is yours, fill out that state’s claim form and submit it with the proper documentation (e.g. an old electric bill that shows that address).

Step 5: Patience. The average time I have heard is about 6 months.

Good luck and Show Me the Money!
