Château De Pocé, Sauvignon 2000May 01 '03 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Château De Pocé 2000 -- A Gold Medal winner at the 2001 Le Concours Général Agricole, Paris. Wine Spectator magazine recently reported that sales of French wine have tanked in the United States: "In a four-week period ending March 23, French wine declined 17 percent in volume, while sales of American wine were down 1.2 percent." See: http://www.winespectator.com/Wine/Daily/News/0,1145,2054,00.html That said, I have been finding some outstanding wine buys for French wines at some discount retailers. My most recent discovery is a nice, dry Sauvignon from Domaine Chainier (Pierre Chainier): Domaine Chainier Château De Pocé Sauvignon de Touraine, 2000 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are a couple of digital photos I took: whole bottle-- http://www.4-1-1.com/wine/ChateauDePoce100x350x75.jpg 18.7 Kb label-- http://www.4-1-1.com/wine/ChateauDePoce200x300x75.jpg 34.4 Kb Alcohol: 12.0% by volume. Production: 100% Sauvignon; oak aged; L'appellation Touraine Appearance: Pale straw-yellow color. Clear in glass. Aroma: Very aromatic; pronounced lemon grass, herb, smokey oak, apple and gooseberry aromas. Flavor: Fresh. Grapefruit-citrusy and an earthy spice (herbal) Sauvignon with mineral tones and a pleasant, light oak presence. Acidic, but not abrasive, with excellent balance and flavor. Turns a bit buttery and soft as it warms in the glass. Herbal, dry finish with a touch of lemon rind and stone. Price and Availability: This wine normally retails in the U.S. for about $9 bottle. In Europe, for about 6€ (Euros; a little more than $6 U.S.). I purchased it for only $4.30 at a Big Lots! location in Whittier, California. At this price, I am buying more. Shipped by Pierre Chainier, Amboise, France. Imported by Victoire Imports Company of San Leandro, California (sole U.S. agent and importer). More info: http://www.victoireimports.com/frenchwine/PierreChainier/pierremenu.html Recommendations: Serve at 10-to-14°C (50-to-57°F); a refrigerator temperature is definitely too cold. Drink up through 2004; this wine is made to drink fresh. Would pair very well with shell fish or grilled white fish. Alternatives: Château de la Roche Sauvignon (Touraine) 2000 Verdict: Appearance: 4/5 Aroma: 23/25 Flavor: 35/40 Body: 8/10 Overall Quality: 18/20 ------------------------------ My Score: 88 -- 4 stars. I will buy again. An excellent white wine for those who enjoy dry, herbally whites. |
