Too Slow, Too Incompatible
Written: Jul 22 '01
Pros:Works with older pcs and operating systems that don't have USB
Cons:Slow, requires older operating systems (95, 98, or nt4)
The Bottom Line: No support for newer operating systems, slow, requires software to be installed to work.
This device works, but it's slow, consumes somewhat expensive watch type batteries and the drivers do NOT work with Windows NT 2000 or WindowsXP.
I just want you to realize that just because it looks like a floppy disk - it isn't something you can pop into any machine and start grabbing your photos from a memory stick. It requires software to be installed on the machine - software that is compatible with the operating system in order to work properly.
I wrote to Sony after I upgraded to Win2k on my laptop and they said there was no support for other OSs planned at the time I wrote them. What a waste - it must mean they are phasing out this product for sure.
It could easily take half an hour or more to download a 64MB memory stick to a PC where the drivers do work. This is a bit better than the serial port adapter but still a long time to wait on getting your photos every time you fill up a memory stick.
I much prefer the USB memory stick reader that I bought last weekend which is FAST - seconds to copy a 64MB stick! And worked perfectly with WindowsXP (RC1, which I've been running for over two weeks now) by just plugging it in.
